Tripping and Slipping to the Top

This cycle on ANTM: Tyra punked the 14 wannabes and me by not doing a casting episode. She made the top 14 think they were losers until revealing that they were in their new house. Alexandria soon showed her colors as the house bitch leading to a confrontation at a challenge witnessed by Nigel. Brittani had a meltdown at panel and got the redemption arc. Meanwhile, Ondrei walked out before makeovers due to unresolved family issues. Otherwise, despite multiple chances to get scorched, the girls survived to make each panel, their numbers dwindled as the final five got to go to Morocco. Now, we’re down to the final two: Molly, an adopted girl with gorgeous looks but an anger management problem and Brittani, an editorial girl who needs to cry to get emotional on set. Who will win? Find out!

Wanna be on top?

So, remember Molly’s awful makeover? I think I found the inspiration. I get American Life Network (ALN) and they’ve been running reruns of “Chicago Hope.” In one episode, Lauren Holly had hair that looked just like Molly’s makeover. And it didn’t look good on Holly either.

Marrakesh! Molly and Brittani celebrate being in the final two. We see pictures of Brittani growing up and she talks about her mother a bit more. Molly decides to curse more before we see some pictures of little Molly. She talks about her mother and rehab. Seriously, what did she go to rehab for?

Anyway, she comes home to see her picture and she talks about Brittani’s potential as competition. She notes that Brittani always rocks the runway and is great

TYRA MAIL! “Sahel, Khafif, Zoulnah.” Brittani hopes those aren’t the words in the Cover Girl commercial. Brittani recalls her breakdown and her strength. Molly is nervous as well about having to be Cover Girl perky. The two still share a bed? Oh, I guess not.

Ivan Bart meets the girls to have in depth interviews with the girls so he can know them. Ivan meets with Molly, who says she wants to be a muse for a designer. Ivan likes her photographs. Brittani follows. She says that she can move away because she knows her family is already there. Ivan likes her face and her attitude. He’s excited to see her do the runway.

The girls go to find Mr. Jay for their Cover Girl shoot. Today, they are shilling for Lip Perfection. Mr. Jay will be directing with three cameras and a teleprompter. The girls hit makeup and hair. Brittani is nervous because her track record in front of a video camera isn’t so great. Molly practices her script and Mr. Jay praises her reading. Brittani needs to inject her personality and starts to crying. Molly thinks Brittani has anxiety problems.

Molly goes first and Mr. Jay reminds her to smile even when the camera is off. He tells her to trust herself. She reveals she doesn’t talk with her hands and Mr. Jay tells her not to force it. Mr. Jay fears she may have lost her charm.

Brittani is next. Brittani goes a bit fast but she at least remembers the three cameras. Mr. Jay is worried about Brittani and so is Brittani as we go to…

COMMERCIALS!

We come back to Brittani, who gets the “pretend you’re talking to your best friends” direction. She nails it. He says she flips a switch and remains on from that point. He loved her.

Molly goes to shoot with Pierpaolo Ferrari. He loves her. Brittani is next. He tells her not to be sweet but strong. Brittani says they are now the edgy image. He liked Brittani’s…hair? I don’t know. I usually don’t like when they subtitle people with accents, but I think he needed it.

At home, Molly is down. The girls then go to their Italian Vogue shoot. Ferrari is there again as well as Valentina Serra, the stylist for Italian Vogue. Brittani recalls how she would rip out pictures of models to decorate her walls and wants to be them. Valentina and Ferrari loved Brittani and called her professional. Molly had lunch and says it’s missing chicken. Brittani says that Molly is cranky. She complains over her photo shoot. Ferrari and Valentina think she lost her energy and tell her not to be so sad. Valentina and Ferrari aren’t impressed.

Brittani and Molly don’t talk on the Moroccan Model Mobile as the girls stress about the final.

COMMERCIALS!

MARAKKESH! Molly comes home to find her parents sitting on the couch. She runs to hug them. We are reminded again that she was adopted. Brittani knows her mom can’t come because of her anxiety disorder or her back surgery. She cries as she says she’s used to it and wishes it was different, but it can’t. Molly’s mom kinda adopts Brittani, who does get to talk to her mother via video chat. She says she hopes to win and make it so that her mother doesn’t have to work any more. Molly’s mom continues to try to engage Brittani.

TYRA MAIL! “Tomorrow’s runway will be mania.” Brittani notes that Molly is in a better mood, which ratchets up the competition.

The girls meet Mr. Jay in the Granada Palace from the 16th century. The runway will be salon style through different rooms. They are modeling Vivenne Westwood, including Anglomania. Time to bring back the eliminated wannabes! Kasia, Alexandria and Hannah all come back. And now it’s time to bring out Ann! Oh, her walk was horrible but awkward. Hannah is on Team Brittani while Alexandria is Team Molly. Kasia is both. Brittani hopes she doesn’t do something to ruin it. Molly’s parents talk to Molly as Tyra sneaks up to wish Molly good luck. Molly’s mom says she always wanted children with good self-esteem and sense of humor. And Molly has it. Really…? Anyway, Molly admits she was screwed up and Molly’s mom thanks Dr. Tyra for getting her to admit that.

Tyra goes to talk to Brittani. Tyra is impressed that Brittani is strong despite her mother not being there.

Time for the fashion show. Is anybody else beside the panel and Molly’s parents there? A band comes out to get everyone in the room as Mr. Jay asks if anybody is ready. Once the distractions are done, Ann starts the show. And thank god, they got her walking lessons! Oh, Ann, I miss you! Molly is next and uses her attitude to her advantage. Kasia and Alexandria are seen as is Hannah. Brittani follows and Tyra is impressed. What is Ms. J wearing? Sorry. Brittani runs to get ready. Molly talks about the crazy scene backstage.

Molly goes for round two. She says she feels she’s doing good and rocks to the music. She impresses her parents. Brittani is round two and she works her bag. We see Alexandria again. Molly and Brittani do their final lap together. Brittani and Molly pose and then Brittani falls just as she reaches the end. Brittani hurts her ankle and is afraid she screwed up. She wishes her mother was there to talk to her as they decide to redo the final walk.

COMMERCIALS!

We come back to Brittani’s meltdown. The girls do the final walk but she walks it out in the final go-round. Ivan goes to meet the girls. They are doing a second round of makeovers for panel.

OH MY GOD! MR. JAY IS ON THE PANEL! Sorry, ahead of myself…Tyra really, really loves the short look. Brittani looks like she has McKey’s haircut. Anyway, there are prizes: A contract with IMG Models, cover of Vogue Italia, a spread in Vogue and Beauty-in-Vogue, and a contract with Cover Girl Cosmetics. There are judges: Nigel Barker, Andre Leon Talley and Mr. Jay Manuel! Brittani is first. Mr. Jay and Nigel loved her confidence. They tell her not to break character. Mr. Jay commends her for being hurt and doing the final turn. Tyra loves Brittani’s poses. Molly is next. Nigel isn’t thrilled with her shake in the walk and Mr. Jay thinks she started to think. Andre thought the bounce was too much. Tyra tells her to work on transitions.

Time for commercials! Nigel says he loves her profiles and asymmetry. Mr. Jay says she’s perfect to direct and nothing bothered to her. Mr. Jay loved it. Tyra thought she was gorgeous but mean girl. Nigel agrees that it wasn’t “Cover Girl.” Andre wishes she got the hair cut before the commercial. Mr. Jay praises her for memorizing the script. Nigel and Andre loves Brittani’s shot. Mr. Jay praises her edge. Tyra says she wants that lipstick. Nigel loves the light on Molly’s face. Mr. Jay likes her commitment while Andre wants to put it in his salon.

Time for the judges to deliberate.

But first, COMMERCIALS!

DELIBERATION! Nigel loves their necks. Mr. Jay thinks Molly has the Top Model factor. Andre thinks Brittani has a chameleon quality. Nigel likes Molly’s body movement and angles. Tyra and Andre praise Brittani for coming back out and not showing any pain. Nigel loves Brittani’s smile and uniqueness. Nigel thinks Molly is not the conventional blonde. We see Tyra’s pictures of Brittani and Molly. Mr. Jay thinks Molly could get booked while they love Brittani’s romantic quality.

Time for the reveal! I really don’t like their makeovers. America’s Next Top Model is…I don’t know you guys! It’s BRITTANI! YES! Woohoo! I mean, would it have been a tragedy if Molly was chosen? Hell no. She deserved it as well. But I loved Brittani from the get-go. Tyra hugs Molly and says she will wake up, realize she is still a model and can be very successful. Brittani says her mother is going to be so surprised. She came from a trailer park. She says not to give up because that’s when something really really great will happen.

Congrats, Brittani! I got nervous with her fall, which a friend pointed out was a first in Top Model history. Chantal tripped, but she didn’t fall way back when Saleisha was practically handed the win on a silver platter. But it was a tough decision, but I think Brittani fought harder. Hey, maybe Molly can come back on next cycle to battle it out again. But I think she’s got a bright future ahead of her. Good luck, Molly and Brittani!

So, that’s the end of Cycle 16. I hope you enjoyed the ride. I know I did, even if no one got even singed. So, I hope you all have a safe summer and will tune in this coming fall for Cycle 17!

Quote of the Episode:

“First thing I am going to go home and take a nap,” Molly, after losing.

(I really hope they bring Jade back for Cycle 17 just for the Quotes of the Episode segments!)
