Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: All Shook Up

Last time: It was Zoey’s birthday! Maggie threw a party for Zoey and everyone came –except Leif, who was at some sort of contest. Zoey and Max decided to turn their pause into a breakup so he could figure out what he felt for Rose and Zoey could figure out what she felt for Simon. Mo and the fire marshal got closer, though it was a shock when he mentioned he had kids with his ex-husband. David helped Aiden write a song and was then horrified to realize it was a song about how much Aiden wanted Zoey, who turned him down gently. During a heartsong, Zoey learned that McKenzie and Tobin had feelings for each other. Tatiana revealed that while she was into Simon, he was into someone else – with strong implications that “someone else” was Zoey. And on her birthday, Simon and Zoey shared a kiss.

A lot certainly happened. I’m still not sure the romances we saw last episode will be endgame (except for Emily and David) though I’ll be interesting to see those journeys.

Well, there’s nothing else to discuss just yet so let’s dive into the episode!

Anyone, please send me anyone/Lord, is there SPOILERS!

We open with Zoey and Simon lying in bed together. They declare that it was weird and it almost seems like they are talking about their kiss and possibly sleeping together on Zoey’s birthday. But nope, they are talking about switching sides of the bed and so they switch back as they decide to never do that again. Zoey reveals that it’s been a few weeks since her birthday and that things are going well for her and Simon. He says he loves that they can still find new things to discover about the other and reveals he belongs to a woodworking club. Simon then asks her about any secrets of hers she hasn’t shared yet.

(Switch!)

If he only knew…

Zoey avoids the question and says she needs to think about it. She goes into the closet and goes up on her tiptoes to pull down a sweatshirt. Zoey asks if her height is a secret but Simon confirms that it’s not. She bluffs her way through before revealing that Mo is taking her to a psychic for her birthday to see if they could talk to her father. Simon warns her to be careful, that some psychics are just grief vampires. She does a bad Dracula impression before telling Simon she sometimes does voices as he laughs.

(Pillow fight!)

She then heads to her mother’s house and finds everyone enjoying breakfast. Zoey asks Maggie for her father’s watch, saying the psychic needs it to make a connection with the other side. Maggie hands the watch over but makes Zoey promise not to read the inscription on the inside as it’s rather naughty. She then asks Zoey if the psychic can find out where Mitch put their rice cooker as she needs it for a dinner party she’s hosting. She says Zoey’s party showed her that she needs to be more social so she invited a few friends over. Zoey is proud of her mother. David asks Zoey to ask their dad if he’s disappointed that David quit his job and isn’t really doing anything with his life now. And Emily asks her to ask if she’ll ever feel joy again. Zoey starts to laugh but Emily remains stony-faced so Zoey says she will.

Mo takes Zoey to meet Nova, who does psychic readings as well as makes crafts. Nova offers them some pomegranate fizzy water and Zoey makes some awkward jokes that Nova doesn’t appreciate. She knows that people make fun of her gift and says that Zoey doesn’t know what it’s like. Oh, if only Nova knew. Anyway, she takes Mitch’s watch and then holds Zoey’s hands. The lights then flicker and Zoey asks what’s going on. Nova says that the electricity sucks in her building…or maybe some deep connection was just established between them. But it’s probably just the sucky power. She then notes that something is mixed up inside Zoey and then asks if Zoey’s father liked movies. Zoey says he did just like every other person. Nova then says the spirits have left, ending their session.

Zoey later visits Maximo’s and talks with Max. It seems their breakup isn’t so awkward, I guess because she has Simon and he has Rose. Zoey reveals that she’s considering tells Simon about her powers and wants Max’s input. He’s on Team Don’t Tell as he felt knowing about her powers created a power imbalance that they couldn’t really overcome. She thanks him for his input and will consider that.

She then asks how he’s doing and he starts to answer before he spies Rose. Music starts and Zoey settles in for a song. Except Max starts singing this heartbreaking song about crying out for help, asking for anyone to realize that the singer is making this cry. (Demi Lovato’s “Anyone”) And kudos to Skylar Astin. He performs the song with such heartbreak and pain, it breaks your heart.

The song ends and Max continues saying that he’s feeling really good. Zoey tells him that he just sang the most heartbreaking song to her and asks if he’s sure. He says he is as Rose comes over. She greets Zoey and invites her to an art show she’s put together. The artist apparently uses discarded pieces of technology and figured that was up Max’s and Zoey’s alley. Zoey agrees before Max and Rose excuse themselves. They’re off to some amusement park – I think – and Max assures Zoey that he’s really happy. She watches them leave as she says something funky is going on.

Zoey visits Mo the next morning and tells him all about her encounter with Max. She says that she does believe Max that the song didn’t match his mood but still doesn’t know why he sang it. Mo suggests that maybe the song was indicating something that Max himself didn’t know yet and suggested that Zoey take a page from Olivia Benson’s book and interrogate him. He then goes to watch a marathon of Law and Order: SVU while Zoey heads to work. Mo also reminds Zoey that he and Perry are having an adult sleepover that night.

She heads into work and Simon invites her to his woodworking club the next night. Zoey agrees to go before checking in with her team. Leif is back and is helping Tobin with his macrophone, showing a mockup design made for them. McKenzie taunts him before her team pulls out their microphones, which she says they didn’t even notice. Zoey is about to step in when music starts to play and her teams sings “One” by Harry Nilsson (“One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do…”). That confuses her and she absolutely certain that isn’t the song they should be singing. When it ends, she tells them to keep working on their projects and runs off.

(Something is not right...)

We then cut to Mo and Perry’s date. All seems to be going well until he gets a call. He tries to ignore it but it’s followed by a text. His son can’t find his plush fox and it’s likely he left it at Perry’s house. The son won’t sleep without it so Perry needs to go home to get it. Mo is pissed off and I briefly wonder if maybe the ex is making up excuses to keep Perry from moving on.

Zoey visits her mom and asks about the dinner. Maggie says it ended early and that she felt awkward being the unpaired person with her couple friends. She then starts singing “Anything You Can Do,” arguing with herself. Zoey realizes that Maggie is singing the song she should’ve heard from her programmers and that they must’ve been singing Maggie’s song. She calls Mo as Maggie keeps singing in the background, telling Mo that things aren’t glitching – the songs are mixed up!

(I really love this gif)

She visits Mo the next day and he’s still in a sour mood over what happened with Perry. He rants about it while Zoey wants to discuss her issue. Mo is a bit skeptical about it when Perry shows up to apologize. Mo then starts singing “The More I Drink” by Blake Shelton, which confirms to Zoey that everything is mixed up. And it confirms it for Mo, who knows he would never sing country.

(Ride 'em, cowboy!)

Zoey and Mo go back to Nova to see if she can provide any insight – or at least tell Zoey what she did to her. Nova doesn’t know about Zoey’s mix up and is still pissed at Zoey’s attitude during her last visit. But she says she’s getting a name with M. Zoey says that would be her father Mitch, which is something Zoey told Nova before her first session. Nova is pissed off again and walks off. Zoey says that if Simon reacts the way she is reacting to Nova, then she probably shouldn’t tell him about her powers. Mo tells her to focus on her Freaky Friday situation and that reminds Zoey that Freaky Friday was her favorite movie to watch with her father, trying together both things Nova said. She figures out she needs to find who each heartsong belongs to and she’ll eventually find who really sang the call for help Max sang. Which means she has to pester everyone she knows until they burst into a heartsong.

She starts with Simon at work and asks if he’s feeling something intensely. Zoey says he doesn’t have to tell her, he can just think it. He is amused and says he’s excited for her to come to his meeting that night as they go to the bar. Music starts to play and Zoey is ready to figure out what his song is. He then starts singing “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)” by Ylvis and doing this crazy dance around the room. And I have to give kudos to John Clarence Stewart for really committing to it. The songs ends and Zoey is just as confused as ever.

(It certainly is an interesting dance)

Going back to Mo’s, she learns that Mo has put together a murder board to keep track of everyone. It’s a little creepy but it does help. They are able to connect the programmers with Maggie but no one else is paired up yet as they figure out who else to push for heartsongs. They decide to try Rose next.

They go to the opening of the technology-inspired art show. Zoey says that they will talk to Rose, see if she performs a heartsong and then she’s going to Simon’s meeting. Max then greets them and shows them around the art displays, telling them to avoid the Furby autopsy room. He says he’s seen things he can unsee and I don’t even want to imagine what that was. Rose greets Zoey and Mo before going to stand with the artist as he makes a pretty pretentious speech.

When he finishes, Zoey and Mo join Rose and Max again. A server asks if they want anything to drink. Zoey and Mo take glasses but Rose says she doesn’t want any. The server reminds her that its free and is pretty pushy. Mo snaps that the woman doesn’t want anything and the server finally moves on. Rose thanks him before excusing herself to handle something. She then starts singing Dua Lipa’s “IDGAF” as she dances around the installation.

(Damn)

Zoey explains the song Rose is singing and Mo goes on a rant about Perry, allowing them to figure out that Rose is singing his heartsong. Which means Mo sang her heartsong. Zoey is ready to blow out of there before wondering why Rose is singing about getting drunk. She watches as Rose grabs a bottle of water from the bar and goes to sit by herself, looking sad. Zoey realizes she still has work to do. She calls Simon to apologize about cancelling on him but says that something has come up. He seems understanding but we can see how disappointed he looks.

After ending her call, Zoey goes to sit with Rose. She says that while they barely know each other, she can tell that Rose is sad and was wondering if she wanted to talk about it. Rose asks if she ever had a secret she knew she should tell but was scared to do so? Well, that’s certainly on the nose for Zoey’s situation and Zoey says she has. Rose then admits that Max remembers her as the young teenager from camp but she had some wild years as an adult. She says she’s now a year sober and doesn’t know how to tell Max. Zoey tells her that Max is a very understanding person and assures her that he won’t treat her any differently after hearing the truth. Rose thanks her.

At Mo’s, they connect Rose and Mo. But that still leaves whose heartsong Simon sang and Zoey is still no closer to figure out whose heartsong Max sang. In another rant about Perry, Mo reveals that the fight is over him going back for his son’s stuffed fox so Zoey figures Simon sang his heartsong. Mo knows that Perry’s taking his children to the science museum the next day and it just so happens that Zoey is a VIP member because of course she is.

We see her waiting around the dinosaur exhibit until Perry comes through with his children – Auggie and Amirah. Zoey pretends to bump into him and they talk for a bit, with him trying to get more insight into Mo or any idea if he still has a chance. He explains that Auggie hasn’t really been handling the divorce well and has been suffering from nightmares. His stuffed fox is the only thing that helps him and Perry will always put his children first. Zoey tells him to give Mo some time and space. She then asks him about the sound a fox makes and Perry groans. He says Auggie loves that song and makes Perry sing it while doing this weird dance around the house. Once it’s in his head, he can’t get it out and Zoey waits for the heartsong.

But it’s not Perry who starts singing – it’s his son, Auggie. He serenades Zoey with Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain” and she’s touched, knowing that Simon really meant to sing a love song to her but that he also had some insecurities about her feelings for him.

(Sing it, Auggie)

Zoey returns to the office and talks with Simon. She tells him that she doesn’t trust easily and is still learning to open up to people, so she asks him for some patience. Zoey also tells him that she was convinced that her college boyfriend was cheating on her and so she hacked his email as well as slashed his tires. Or rather punctured them so that they deflated slowly. Simon thanks her for her openness and then shows her what he made in his woodworking club – it’s a stool so she can reach the clothes in her closet. She climbs on it and kisses him.

(This is sweet)

That night, Maggie joins Mo and Zoey at Maximo’s. Zoey says her mom can have fun and socialize that doesn’t involve her married friends, especially if it makes her sad or uncomfortable. Maggie thanks her and they enjoy some drinks. Zoey and Max talk – and seem to be in a good place themselves. The lights then flicker before Mo pops up, apologizing for something he did. Zoey then gets an idea and asks Max if he has pomegranate fizzy water. He says he does and goes to get it for her, teasing her that no one over the age of five calls it fizzy water.

She goes back to Nova’s and apologizes for her attitude. Zoey tells Nova about her powers and Nova is more willing to connect with her. Though she does call Zoey out on not being able to tell someone is sad unless they are singing a sad song to her. But they start to work together to try to figure out who might be in pain. As they do, Zoey gets a text from Emily – she has been getting them throughout the episode, with Emily sending her videos, gifs and even asking to hang out. She says it’s not like her sister-in-law before she starts to put things together. Zoey wonders if the “M” Nova received earlier wasn’t the letter but “Em” for Emily. Nova agrees it could be and so Zoey goes to check in on her sister-in-law.

(Realization hits)

Emily is putting Miles to bed as she and Zoey chat. As she looks down at Miles, Emily starts singing “Roseanna” and Zoey knows it’s Max’s song. It breaks her heart as she realizes that the very sad song is Emily’s and it’s confirmed when her sister-in-law breaks down and starts singing “Anyone,” pleading with someone to notice her. Zoey holds her as she apologizes for not hearing Emily earlier but she’s there now and she hears her.

(Poor Emily)

And that’s where the episode ends.

That was a fun but intense episode. Watching Zoey’s powers glitch continues to be fun – whether she’s singing her feelings or trying to find out which heartsong belongs to who. I hope if we get a season 3, we see the powers glitch by transferring to someone else.

While I still think Nova was right to call out Zoey about the fact that she couldn’t tell someone was sad unless they sang a sad song at her, I do think this episode shows off how Zoey has grown since she got her powers. She had enough emotional intelligence and awareness to suspect that “Anyone” was not really Max’s heartsong. And to believe him when he said he was actually happy. And she knew that the programmers’ song was wrong before making the connection that everything was switched. So I do think that definitely shows growth as I’m not sure Season 1 Zoey would’ve accepted that and would’ve gone down the road of trying to make Max happy until he was pissed off. And I think it would’ve been Mo making the connection about the switched songs.

Everyone handled the switched songs very, very well. Max delivered a heartbreaking rendition of “Anyone.” Katie Findlay nailed “IDGAF” and Alex Newell slayed “The More I Drink.” Both Mary Steenburgen and John Clarence Stewart committed to their more humorous numbers and made them amazing. And Rocco Morris, who played Auggie, had such a beautiful voice and gave the sweetest rendition of “Love on the Brain.”

I think it will be interesting to explore Emily’s storyline. I had a feeling back in episode one that something was wrong with her after giving birth and it seems we’re going to see that play out. And this is a writing team I trust to handle this storyline well.

Next time: Zoey tries to help Emily.
