Bringing Down the House

Oh my God, I read an article where the show runners said not to miss the last few minutes of the finale and they were right!

Sorry, getting ahead of myself. Let us continue to the How I Met Your Mother finale, which requires us to snag the TARDIS and go straight to this coming September.

Plot “A”: Ted and Zoey. Yes, the saga continues. Ted is doing great—the Arcadia is scheduled for destruction and Ted can begin to build his dream building. Even if he and Barney cannot agree on who gets to push the button. However, he has a run in with Zoey. She’s not doing great. She hasn’t found a job yet and I guess is getting no alimony from the Captain. So she has roommates. Who are drug dealers. She then asks Ted to meet her for coffee. Robin and Barney remind Ted that that is code for “Let’s get back together.” Ted said he didn’t think so, but then Zoey asked to get back together and then he was certain. Barney and Robin warn him of not doing so, reminding Ted of when he wanted to get back together with Robin. She turned him down.

Ted then goes to the future site of his baby. I’m going to refer to it as that from now on. Ted’s Baby. Anyway, the foreman isn’t so keen on being nice to Ted. He calls him “Hotshot” and then tells him to choose a type of light bulb to use. Ted freaks out. He decides to meet Zoey anyway, back at the coffee shop they went to on their first date.

Ted goes to get orchids for Zoey, determined to find the right ones. Robin and Barney tackle him and convince him he is only doing this because he is stressed. Ted confesses that he feels he didn’t deserve his big break because Barney got it for him. Barney and Robin assure him that he is the best person for the job and he will do brilliantly. Ted believes them and decides not to see Zoey. He gives the orchids to a woman and asks her to give them to the blonde woman sitting in the café alone. She does so—except there was another blonde in the café who gets the orchids!

“And that, kids, is how I met your mother,” Future!Ted says. But that’s just the show runners having fun with us, as Future!Ted soon says he’s kidding.

And in the end, Ted AND Barney get to push the button to blow up the Arcadia. And it’s destruction…isn’t as epic as I thought it would be. They obviously blew the budget somewhere else because that was clearly a CGI creation. And it blew. And that isn’t a pun. It was horribly rendered, in my opinion.

Plot “B”: Lily and Marshall. Aren’t they adorable? Lily brings in a new hamster to replace the old hamster. However, she gets sick. She looks at the bag on her desk and fears she has food poisoning. She remembers she got Marshall something from the same restaurant and tries to warn him. She is too late, however. Marshall has eaten the soup and his clock begins ticking. Meanwhile, Lily moves into the bathroom.

Marshall goes down to MacLaren’s, acting like he’s going to die rather than just spend about twenty-four hours locked in his bathroom. He orders his “last meal” while complaining about Lily. He says that when she throws up, she sounds like a dinosaur from Jurassic Park. And they dub in the sound. At least the show isn’t afraid to depict vomiting as something dainty. Because it’s not. Trust me. I spent a weekend a few months ago, cuddling with a bucket at night. Worst weekend ever.

Anyway, Marshall returns to the apartment. Lily is sitting on the couch, holding a bucket and in her pajamas. She’s concerned that Marshall told them the real reason why Lily was sick. He lies and says he just told them she has a head cold. She is relieved; she doesn’t want their friends thinking the worst of her situation. And they are: Barney and Robin speculate which end it is coming out of and mime it.
Marshall is still worried about his impending doom when he gets a call. The top environmental law firm wants him to come in for an interview. That day. He tries to put it off, but they insist. So, he goes for the interview with Dave Foley. Who eats during the interview and shows pictures of animals who were mangled due to disasters. Marshall is clearly agitated and worried about becoming sick, but makes it through the interview. And then Dave Foley asks if Marshall has any questions. Finally, Marshall just admits that he’s going to be sick and runs out of the room.

He returns home and Lily asks how he’s doing. Marshall just lets it all out. He’s had a very crappy year and just wants to sleep until it’s over. Which is what he does. He wakes up to find he didn’t get sick and joyfully tells this to Lily. She smiles and explains that it wasn’t food poisoning after all. She holds out a positive pregnancy test. That’s right, the Eriksens are finally reproducing! They kiss as we all say, “Aww.”

Plot “C”: Barman and Robin. The two of them team up to make sure that Ted doesn’t go back to Zoey. This includes them having Ranjit drive them to Brooklyn to intercept the duo. In the back of his car, they have a conversation about their own relationship. They recall how horrible they looked by the end. They agree that they were good, but it just wasn’t right. There is still some tension and some potential, but for now they are happy being friends.

After stopping Ted from making a mistake, Robin and Barney go for a walk. That’s when they run into Nora. She and Barney have an awkward conversation, with Barney asking if they could go for a coffee sometimes. She agrees. As Robin watches this, she looks pensive and sad.

So, remember that wedding from the season premiere? We come back to it! Lily is still in her pink dress and has a flat stomach. So this must be after she gives birth. She tells Ted the best man is needed. He opens the door to reveal…

Okay, if you saw the episode, scroll down.

If you didn’t, make your guesses now.

Is it Punchy?

Is it Barney?

Is it Robin?

And it is…Barney!

And that was our season finale. Barney was my first guess after the season premiere way back in September. Especially since the producers said it was game-changing. Now the question is: Who is the lucky bride? Is it Nora? Is it Robin? Is it someone else we haven’t met yet? I read an interview with the producers. They’ve already planned out most of season 7 and have hinted some Barney/Robin reunions as well as more serious girls for Barney. And Lily and Marshall are finally having a baby—which is going to provide some good comedic material.

And Ted’s single again. Not too excited about that one. And that same interview said that Ted would be a big shot now. Which means that he’s going to be a complete jerk. Oh boy.

So, what were your thoughts on the season finale? What do you hope happens next season?
