ANTM: Just Hanging Around

Last week on ANTM: Tyra tricked me into watching a casting episode. Thirty girls from several colleges and beauty schools converged on LA for a chance to be on the 19th cycle of the show. Tyra and Kelly are back, but there are new things! Mr. Jay is gone, replaced with Johnny Wujek. Nigel is gone, replaced by Rob Evans. And the rotating guest judge? Is now people who voted while the season was taping. So the judges whittled down the contestants to the final 13. Who gets the bad luck (or good fortune?) to get kicked off first? Find out!

Wanna be on top?

(Anyone else confused by this whole “voting” process?)

The girls bond in the house as Tyra enters. Screaming ensues. As is contractually obligated (No, really). Kiara talks about being on her game before Tyra talks about the girls getting grades. On challenges, by the judges, and the fans. So scores will determine who stays and who goes rather than the mysterious WTH? reasons of cycles past.

Tyra introduces the girls to the Tyra Suite. Best photo winner will get to stay there. And it’s nice. With a great closet. The girl who wins the challenge will get money deposited into a scholarship. But the girl can only collect it if she wins. Wow.

Maria is apparently some sort of child genius but she can’t play chess. Kiara talks about being the oldest of seven children. Victoria misses her mom. She hasn’t had a boyfriend or sex, but she’s only 18. It’s not bad…until she talks about how she just wants to stay with her mother. That’s weird.

We are distracted when the girls start talking about a booming sound. Victoria thinks its an earthquake (the hell? I know she’s from the East Coast, but even we didn’t think the earthquake came with noise last year) as we go to credits…

Wow, those were quick. At least they brought back the Top Model song rather than that strange thing we had to listen to last year. And my “Wanna be on top?” is relevant again! Yay!

COMMERCIALS!

The girls go to see the Iota Phi Theta Step Team. Wow. But they are just the pre-show for Rob Evans. He congratulates them and tells them to change because they are going to Hollywood. Allyssa is excited. They enter a club and you know the patrons are like “This show is still on?” Rob introduces them to Jonte, a performer and choreographer. Rob holds the Tyra Suite key and the challenge is to strut their stuff on the stage. Kiara walks first and tries to find the line between sexy and fierce. Jonte doesn’t like Jessie’s walk while Destiny feels like a ho. Leila gets hit by a ring. Oh, show. Brittany has fun while Kristin needs pixilation. Maria struggles and Victoria doesn’t think she wants it. Yvonne goes into her dance background while Allyssa talks about not lifting her leg. Victoria thinks she rocked it.

Jonte has feedback. He tells Jessie to connect with the audience. He loved Kiara, Victoria, Brittany and Yvonne. He tells Kristin not to pull down her skirt on a runway. So who wins the challenge?

COMMERCIALS!

Anyway, the first challenge winner is Yvonne. She gathers her key while Victoria is disappointed and thought she deserved to win. Jonte praises her leg and how she connected with the audience. So the girls then continue to hang out at the club when P’trique, from YouTube. He brings TYRA MAIL! “Tomorrow’s challenge will leave you hanging, make sure you kill the shot” Allyssa is like “We have to worry about this guy now.”

At home, the girls look at the score. It ranges from 10 to 4. Meanwhile, Yvonne and some others go to investigate the Tyra Suite while Destiny tries to figure out why her score is so low. Kiara says they may have thought her performance was too “stripper.” Destiny talks about it with some of the other girls as Kiara listens in. She steps in and says that if someone has an issue with her to take it up with her.

COMMERCIALS!

We come back to Kiara talking with Destiny. She talks about not getting disrespected and the other girls are like “And we thought Kristin was going to be the house bitch.” The next day, Victoria does some sort of exercise. The other girls talk about Victoria and all know she has issues. Anyway, the model mobile takes them to a room full of animal heads. Johnny greets them and says this is their first photoshoot. And he’s there with Shenae Grimes. She’s going to be the photographer. Wow, they are scrapping the bottom of the barrel this cycle. Where’s Mike Rosenthal when you need him?

Victoria keeps talking and Johnny is like “Shut. Up.” She mounts her head and Shenae is impressed. Yvonne is next and blinks a lot. Johnny loves Nastacia, who actually screams. Brittany impresses Johnny but not Kristin. He lets Kristin dab her sweaty head on his shirt but warns she needs to respect clients. Shenae tells Jessie to focus on her eyes. She wants a better photo than Kristin, who she’s tied at the bottom with. Jessie wants to stick her butt through the whole but she struggles with her head in there.

COMMERCIALS!

Shenae works with Maria to get their angles. She feels separated from her roommates. Allyssa impresses Johnny but he’s not too thrilled with Destiny. Leila impresses Shenae before Kiara steps up. Johnny
compares her to the witch from “Snow White.” You meant “Sleeping Beauty.” She’s rocking the Maleficent look, Johnny.

That’s a wrap!

Kiara talks about her family and it is clear she has mommy issues. Victoria then talks about her mother. She then goes to talk to her mother. And I thought I was homesick when I went to college. Being told she only has five more minutes sends her crying more. The girls are like “The HELL?”

I see they still have that skull and crossbones. Here’s an idea—send that P’Trique guy in as a pirate to do this. Someone’s going home!

COMMERCIALS!

Oh, hey, we brought back Tyra’s panel intro photo. Anyway, there are judges—Kelly and Rob. There is also Bryanboy, a fashion blogger. He’s representing the fan vote. The judges’ score will be added to the challenge score and then the social media score. Anyway, there are prizes. Time to look at some photographs. Yvonne is up first…I still hate the comments. Tyra thinks she is better than her picture but the fans love her. The judges give her three sixes. Kiara has to get a bit of a makeover. Tyra says that she loves the picture because of what the others bring to it not her. The fans aren’t too thrilled. She gets three sevens.

Jessie is next and the judges aren’t impressed. Tyra talks about controlling one’s face. Bryan says the fans want more personality. Kelly and Rob give her fours while Tyra gives her a five. The judges love Laura’s picture. Tyra loves the intensity yet blankness to her eyes. The fans love her as well. Rob and Kelly give her eights while Tyra gives her nines. Maria’s shot doesn’t impress and she questions if it is her best shot. Tyra tells her to lift her chin and says it changes. A fan comments that she has bags under her eyes. Kelly gives her a five while Tyra and Rob give her sixes. The judges love Leila’s picture as do fans. The judges give her tens all around.

Tyra talks about dead smize vs. alive smize for Darian. The fans hate her braids so Darian wants to stick around for makeovers. Rob gives her a five while the women judges give her sixes. Kelly loves Brittany’s eyes and hair though Rob thinks she has too much attitude. The fans are really mean to Brittany. Someone says there is a difference between confidence and arrogance. Brittany starts crying. Tyra tells her it’s okay to say it hurts. Kelly gives her an eight, Rob a six and Tyra a seven. Rob calls her a “pretty girl.” Kelly doesn’t think she is a model. But the internet loves her…because they didn’t hear her speak. Kelly gives her a nine, Rob a seven and Tyra an eight. Kelly gives Allyssa a five, Rob a six and Tyra a nine.

Rob laughs at Victoria’s picture and can’t see what type of model she’d be. Kelly doesn’t like it. A fan praises Victoria as does Tyra. Kelly gives her a five, Rob gives her a six and Tyra gives her an eight. Nastacia is next. Rob wants to see her mouth closed. Kelly gives her a seven while the other two give her eights. Destiny is last. Rob calls her boring and Tyra doesn’t see a model. A fan agrees. Kelly gives her a six, Rob a five, and Tyra a six. Destiny promises to do better.

COMMERCIALS!

ELIMINATION! The girl with best photo is…Leila! She gets the key to the Tyra Suite. Leila is joined by: Nastacia, Brittany, Laura, Kristin, Kiara, Yvonne, Allyssa, Victoria, Darian and Maria. Jessie and Destiny are our bottom two. Two beautiful girls but the photos were plain. They haven’t had time to learn to work their angles. So who’s staying? Destiny. Man, they’re sending Velma home first? Tyra tells Destiny she was chosen because of who she is but she needs to bring it to her photos. Tyra then hugs Jessie and tells her she is special. She can have a modeling career. Jessie says this isn’t the end and thanks people for the votes.

But wait, there’s more! For the next six weeks, Jessie will still continue to do the photoshoots. Whoever has the highest votes will get to re-enter the competition. Wow.

America’s Next Top Model:

Allyssa
Brittany
Darian
Destiny
Jessie
Kiara
Kristin
Laura
Leila
Maria
Nastasia
Victoria
Yvonne

I’m surprised. I really am. I did not think Jessie would go home so quickly. And not when she got so little screen time. Especially not compared to Destiny. But Destiny brings the drama and the judges have a vote still. Anyway, bring on the makeovers!

And maybe some psychiatric help for Victoria.

Next time: Makeover choice! Kiara pisses people off!
