I’ve Been Through the Desert on a Camel

Last week on ANTM: Recap episode!

Last time on ANTM: Go-sees! Alexandria dazzled everyone and Molly learned she could’ve if she hadn’t looked so dour when waiting. The girls then had a photo shoot in garbage. Alexandria soared again and Brittani redeemed herself but Molly and Jaclyn fell into the bottom two. Sadly, Jaclyn will not have the opportunity to baffle Moroccans with her Southern accent as she was sent home. Five girls remain! Who will go home tonight?

Wanna be on top?

DESERT! Marrakech, Morocco. To be exact. The girls arrive and board the Moroccan Model Mobile. Brittani is psyched and thinks she’ll be taking off. Alexandria says she’s excited in a very calm, soft tone. She says she is pulling ahead of the competition and the girls have a bad opinion of her. But she’s a chameleon, she says. She can change…a gecko can’t. Okay…Anyway, the girls go crazy over camels. God, I hope their driver doesn’t speak English. Anyway, Molly is still pissed she was in the bottom two and blames her bad attitude on being adopted. Uh huh.

Anyway, the girls arrive in a market and Kasia talks about being the oldest and fiercely real. The Jays welcome the girls to Marrakech and Mr. Jay looks SO much like a woman it isn’t funny. While the Jays talk, some guy plays with snakes behind them. He is more entertaining than the Jays. They then bombard the models with monkeys and take pictures. Mr. Jay sends them on a tour of Marrakech and the market. I am not a mall rat or a shopper by nature…but damn, I want to go there! Of course, there is the problem that going to Africa immediately disqualifies you from giving blood. Ever. So, I’m stuck visiting Morocco in the World Showcase. Anyway, Hannah blathers on about being memorable.

The girls go to a beautiful restaurant. They enjoy their meal. Kasia talks about beauty coming in other forms than size 2. Brittani thinks she’s stronger than Kasia, but she hasn’t felt safe since she blew up at Alexandria within earshot of Nigel. And we get clips from that. Brittani says that the restaurant is the style of her house…in the future. Kasia thought she meant right now, which Brittani brilliantly responds with: “Did you forget I live in a trailer?”

The girls arrive in a showroom, where they meet Andre Leon Talley. They meet a designer whose name I can’t even begin to pronounce let alone spell. The girls are going to walk for Amir, which I think was part of the guy’s name. I apologize to Moroccans everywhere. Brittani goes first and says she can’t let the dress wear her. Meanwhile, Kasia has trouble finding something that fits. Kasia wonders if they ever had a plus size model before. She feels the workers were wondering what she was doing there and gets teary.

COMMERCIALS!

We come back to them trying to fit Kasia in something. Molly hits the runway. She had to hold the dress, so Andre goes to make her do it again. Brittani says that Molly needs to learn to put on her happy face like Brittani needs to learn to keep her opinions to herself. Hannah comes out next. Kasia finally has a skirt that fits and Andre is impressed she’s the only one who packed her heels. Alexandria is sent back to take off her socks. And I realize Andre mispronounces Alexandria’s name as “Alexandra.” As an Alexandria, I would never let that pass. That “I” is important. Andre praises Kasia for having heels and Brittani for being high fashion. She then confesses that she felt the hate rolling off Alexandria before unleashing an evil laugh. She seriously says: “Muahahaha” and the editors have lowered her voice. She then tells Alexandria she is going down.

It makes me love Brittani all the more.

Anyway, back on the Moroccan Model Mobile, the girls wonder what is coming up next and fear it is go-sees. Molly just wants to sleep. As someone who has traveled to different time zones, that is actually the worse thing you can do. I took a red-eye to London in 2006 and landed at 8 AM. We hit the ground running and doing everything in our power to stay away—wondering Hyde Park, exploring Kensington and Chelsea, wandering up and down High Street Kensington…anything! I went to bed around 11 PM and soon got my clock back in order. But I digress, the girls end up meeting Andre on top of a house. He serves them tea and gets to chat with the wannabes. He asks how they feel…

Alexandria says she feels unique, it’s a great experience. It’s called inflection and emotion. USE IT! Andre reveals that this is their home. The girls run downstairs to explore and it is gorgeous. Alexandria finally gets some excitement when she sees the tub. Kasia and Brittani find the pool. There are two single beds, claimed by Hannah and Alexandria. That leaves a bed to be shared by Kasia, Brittani and Molly. Molly is not thrilled by this and lets it be known. Kasia says she has anger management issues and will get sent home for it.

COMMERCIALS!

TYRA MAIL! “You’ve made it this far, but you’re not over the hump yet.” Everyone actually guesses camels. Kasia says she has to kill in the shoot.

The Moroccan Model Mobile go out to the desert and Brittani enjoys the smell of animals and hay. She’s used to it. Mr. Jay reveals it is the location for their shoot. He’s on top of a camel and shows how difficult it is to get on and off. And that camels aren’t friendly, but the models have to rock their shoot. Their photographer is Michael Woolley and he’s all British. He explains they’ll be dressed in a mix of traditional Barber and European styles. The girls hit makeup and wardrobe. Brittani is excited. Good thing she’s first. Mr. Jay tells her to relax her legs. And they love her. The photographer loves her body postures. Mr. Jay says she has her mojo and confidence back.

Molly says she has to be fake and not reveal her inner bitch. Michael says she looks like a Molly. She gets on the camel and impresses Mr. Jay. He says she brought tension to the shot and he loved it. Brittani says her shoot was an accident. Kasia is next. Michael says she’s getting pose-y and Mr. Jay thinks she’s stuck. They aren’t impressed. Michael says a photographer needs to feel in control and he doesn’t with Kasia. Mr. Jay talks to her after and she says she’s feeling self-conscious. Mr. Jay says that there is a place for her and her body type in the industry. Alexandria follows up as the camel tries to bite her. Mr. Jay warns Michael about her. She tries talking to him and he’s not interested. She gets on the camel and Mr. Jay calls her contrived. He tells her it was awkward. Alexandria says she needs to direct herself and the photographer says she’s over-directing. Alexandria continues to struggle.

Hannah is last. Hannah jokes it isn’t like a bucking bronco and her experience helps on the camel. Mr. Jay loves her as does Michael. She thinks she did a great job and brought something new to the shoot.

That’s a wrap!

Skull and Crossbones! Someone’s going back to the good ole US of A! They all admit to being worried at panel. Kasia says she’s really worried. Brittani says she’s sad to see everyone go but only one can be on top. And then she winks. Alexandria admits her shoot didn’t go too well and Brittani figures that means she sucked.

COMMERCIALS!

Backstage, Tyra welcomes everyone and thankfully left the pant suits at home! But she looks like she’s about to go participate in a horse show. There are prizes. There are judges—Nigel and Andre. Our guest judge is Franca Sozzani, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia. Brittani is up first. Nigel loves her androgyny. Andre says the pictures is out of classic Vogue. Tyra warns her not to hurt herself in pursuit of the picture. Alexandria steps forward and Tyra praises her hair choice. Nigel isn’t thrilled with her legs. Andre tells them to relax their mouths. Franca likes the picture. Tyra reveals the film was inconsistent and that Michael thought Alexandria was talking back. Nigel tells her to be aware of how she is perceived. Tyra warns that the photographer has the power.

Kasia is third and admits she had problems with posing with her body. Tyra reads self-conscious in her film and Andre thinks that her photograph is weak. Tyra tells her to push her inner critic aside. Molly is next. Nigel and Franca like her shot. Andre says she looks like a high-fashion princess in her caravan. Tyra says she doesn’t look aware but she is aware because models are always aware, which is why they make terrible actresses. Is that an admission, Tyra? Though I didn’t think Life Sized was too bad. Anyway, Hannah is last. Andre thinks she is edgy. Franca likes her pose but isn’t sure about her face. Tyra praises her film.

COMMERCIALS!

The judges deliberate. Nigel loves Brittani’s shot and the risk she took. Franca doesn’t think Brittani made the photograph. Andre calls Alexandria “flat.” Nigel comments that she’s having trouble on set again and that she’s fake. Franca doesn’t care for Kasia but Nigel likes it. They love Molly’s shot. Nigel isn’t sure if Hannah understands the narrative, but Andre says some models don’t think but get great shots. I notice that they zoom in on Tyra at that point. Hmm. Anyway, ELIMINATION! Best photo goes to…Molly. She is joined by Brittani and Hannah. That leaves Alexandria and Kasia in the bottom two. They step forward. I want Kasia to stay, but I fear she’s going home. Alexandria: Pictures are beautiful and strong, not as strong as the other three already called. And there is how she behaves on set. Kasia: Some weeks, Tyra loves editing her film. Other weeks, she worries. Tyra loves her body and message, but her confidence is weak. So who stays? Alexandria. Thought so. Alexandria hugs Kasia, who doesn’t return it. Tyra tells her that her pictures are stronger than Kasia’s.

Tyra hugs Kasia. Kasia admits she is disappointed in herself. Tyra tells her to be consistent and to have confidence. Kasia says she got to the top five but she knows she can do better. She says she’s not giving up. It’s just a bump in the road.

And then there were four. I am sad to see Kasia go, but compared to everyone else, she did have the weakest photo there. I don’t think Alexandria is long for the competition and I’m going to call a Molly-Brittani final runway. What do you think?

Next week: FINAL FOUR! And there’s a balancing act involved. With fire.

Quote of the Episode:

“You see a snake, you kill it, you skin it and you eat it. And at the bar I work at, you hang the skin on the wall.”—Brittani, after seeing a snake charmer.
