Nostalgia Nook: Lady Lovelylocks and the Pixietails

Oh, the 80s. And its cartoons. Some hold up, some don’t. Does Lady Lovelylocks? Let’s find out, shall we?

Beware tangles and SPOILERS!

Lady Lovelylocks is the ruler of a kingdom called Lovelylocks. Original, no? Anyway, at the start of the series, she’s been away for…reasons. Where she went and why is never explained so forget about it! When Lady Lovelylocks returns, darkness and a terrible wind plagues her land. These have been conjured by Duchess Ravenwaves, who wants to rule Lovelylocks for some reason. It’s never stated why. I guess she’s just power hungry. Lady Lovelylocks has magical blonde hair and it allows her to keep her kingdom safe and happy. Though she stops Ravenwaves this time, the duchess doesn’t give up. She wants Lovelylocks’ hair to control the kingdom. And she has her own minions which look like hairy Sonics helping her, named for hair problems—Tangles, Snags, etc. They also tend to speak in rhymes.

But Lady Lovelylocks has her own little army behind her: She has her two friends Lady Fairhair (a brunette) and Lady Curlycrown (a ginger). We’ve hit the trifecta! They all have tiny creatures called Pixietails to help them as well. These are furry flying creatures that add “ex” to every word they say. I wish they had subtitles. She also has the help of a blind wizard named True Sight and his dog, Prince. Who is a prince named Strong Heart trapped in a curse. He can only become human briefly during the full moon. For some reason Lady Lovelylocks can’t know. I guess it’s part of the curse? But he’s in love with Lady Lovelylocks. Of course.

Most episodes follow a pattern: Duchess Ravenwaves either creates or tries to manipulate a situation to her benefit. Lady Lovelylocks finds out and lets loose one of her deus ex machinas: the pixietails or True Sight. They defeat Duchess Ravenwaves, who usually shakes her fist as she curses those meddling kids the Power Rangers Lady Lovelylocks. And Lovelylocks laughs at Scooby’s antics Bulk and Skull Ravenwaves’ misfortune.

These episodes generally aren’t connected. A few are, though, toward the end. They involve Duchess Ravenwaves’ right hand…thing…named Hairball finding newly hatched dragons. He is the first thing they see so they assume he’s their mother. Ravenwaves uses this to their advantage, tricking the dragon into thinking Lady Lovelylocks has kidnapped the dragon babies and she had rescued one. So the dragon attacks Lovelylocks Castle. Lady rushes to save her kingdom, helping the baby. The dragon believes Lady is good and hopes to get her other babies, who don’t recognize her and flew off. It takes another episode for her to find and reclaim her babies. And then there’s one where we learn the dragon was part of a circus and owned by a dragon who can look like a man.

To be honest, I was more interested in the dragons. Lose the annoying reverb whenever they talked and I could watch a series about them. Especially if they could all turn into people. Imagine how cool that would be? But no, we get the girl with long hair who has magical creatures with long hair.

If I’m fair, girls do like to brush our dolls’ hair. There’s something calming about it. I still sometimes take out my old American Girl dolls and brush their hair for that reason. And I think the Strong Heart plotline was interesting. Too bad they didn’t really delve into it.

It was an interesting trip down memory lane, but I think my friends and I came up with better stories for Lady Lovelylocks and her friends than the writers.

Next month: Pirates of Dark Water

This comes out the same day as the return of the Nostalgia Critic! So, welcome back, Doug. We’ve missed you. I hope the break did some good and you’re back in rare form.
