The Glee Project: Hit Me With Your Best Shot

Last week on “The Glee Project:” The Gleekabes were tested on their ability to adapt by Kevin McHale (Artie). They had to sing the entirety of “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morrisette and Kevin picked Aylin as the winner. She got a stand out role in the video, “Price Tag” by Jessie J, which no one knew until they arrived at the recording studio. Abraham and Ali struggle in the booth while Mario and Bland struggle on set. The judges struggle with getting Charlie to mesh with the group and Nellie to “pop” in the group. At the reveal, the judges put six people through to perform duets for Ryan Murphy. He chose a bottom three of Abraham, Charlie and Mario before cutting Mario for not taking criticism well. Nine Gleekabes remain, who will be eliminated tonight? Find out!

Glee!

Aylin says she’s glad “Adaptability” week is over as Robert enters. This week’s theme is “Fearlessness.” The Gleekabes like it. Aylin says she’s fearless because she’s a flirtatious girl from a strict Muslim upbringing. Their homework assignment is “Now That We Found Love” by Heavy D and the Boys. Abraham doesn’t know if Asians are supposed to rap. Robert doesn’t think any of them are meant to rap, which is why this will see if they are fearlessness. The Gleekabes divvy up lines as Nellie is nervous. Heh, nervous Nellie. Sorry, started a new job today and I’m a bit sleep deprived. So apparently is Abraham who suggests starting with their butts forward, shaking. For some reason, everyone goes along with it.

Robert meets them in the classroom and introduces the most fearless actor he knows—the awesome Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester), bearing a bullhorn. The Gleekabes go nuts. Especially Ali. She talks about being an improviser and how it took her time to get fame (though she built up quite the reputation as a character actress.” She channels Sue to say she will be judging them harshly. No, she says, she’ll be judging from her heart.

Good Lord, they did the butt forward open? Anyway, since I don’t understand a single word anyone is saying, I’m just sitting. Not a rap fan. Anyway, Robert and Jane clap. She says she enjoyed it but thought Michael hung back more, challenging him to be in front. She liked Aylin’s acting, Lily’s performance, she gives Michael’s challenge to Nellie as well. Jane says she struggled between Aylin and Lily but in the end picks Lily. (Ha, I guessed it!) Aylin is pissed because she feels she deserves to be mentored by Jane Lynch. You got Kevin last week, Aylin. Share the wealth. This week’s song is “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and “One Way or Another.” Nellie talks about standing out. And then Jane reveals the video will involve a slushy fight. The Gleekabes celebrate and Jane thinks they are insane. The butt forward dance didn’t give it away? Anyway, as people who watched the video a thousand times know, it takes place in a high school pool.

The Gleekabes get fitted for their bathing suits but Nellie says she feels uncomfortable. She talks it out with Abraham, Charlie and Bland. Especially about how she doesn’t feel confident. I hope that isn’t her death knoll.

Coming Up: Poor Ali.

Charlie and Aylin are back to flirting. They talk about their experience in the competition so far. She says he may be her first ever boyfriend as he suggests kissing.

Nikki meets the Gleekabes in the recording booth. Nellie notes that everyone is crowded in the window and Nikki says the competition is on. Charlie seems distracted while she thinks he’s trying too hard. Nikki tries to focus him before moving on to Abraham. He redeems himself from last week. Michael says he practiced his line but Nikki doesn’t like how he sings it. He says it might be too high while Nikki thinks he’s letting his fears get to him. Between Michael and Nellie, I don’t know who is going home.

The Gleekabes report to the pool and Aylin gets slushied. Nikki notes that Aylin laughs when she doesn’t do great. Zach and Robert note Charlie is off on lip syncing while Erik works with Nellie getting out of the water sexily. Robert notes her lack of confidence. She confesses she wants to sink under the water. Which she does at one point. Lily gets to hose the other characters. But first, we see her session with Jane. They actually talk about acting. She takes her moment to shine. And it seems she stopped trying to lip sync and just flat out sing. Works.

We see everyone get slushied as Ali asks to be slushied. She says she can’t sit in her wheelchair and her body doesn’t handle extremes well. They throw the slushies at her until she is pushed too far. Crew members rush over, towel her off as Shanna hugs her. She regains her breath and everyone applauds. Robert calls her “fearless.” He is not looking forward to choosing the bottom 3.

Video time! After getting the final slushy, Lily dives into the pool. I think the girls ruled that video.

Coming Up: Bottom 3

Ali and Shanna talk about measuring fearlessness while Aylin and Charlie hug. He makes her promise not to
miss him if he goes. She says she’ll try and kisses him. Then she says it’ll be fine.

Time to hit the stage! The Gleekabes stand before the judges—shouldn’t Nikki be sitting down? She looks ready to pop! Robert and Zach call out Lily and Ali as this week’s VIPs. They are safe. Ali says she can do anything now. Robert praises their performances but some people needed extra notes. Shanna, Bland and Abraham are all called back. They leave the stage. That leaves Michael, Charlie, Nellie and Aylin on stage. Charlie was told he disappeared in group numbers last week and he did it again. He threw the big opening line away. He says he was trying to be natural. Robert calls Aylin about her giggling and she admits she was disappointed. Robert notes Nellie was insecure and while she overcame them, Zach notes Erik gave her more takes. Robert says that Jane gave Michael the note to do more, something he’s been told before. And he struggles in the recording studio. Robert says they must bring their A-game if they want to be the one (maybe) winner of The Glee Project.

Charlie is in the bottom 3 as is Aylin. That leaves Michael and Nellie. Michael is called back, putting Nellie in the bottom. Nellie is singing “If I Were a Boy.” She knows it but notes it’s scary cause it’s Beyonce. Aylin is singing “Take a Bow.” She’s happy. Charlie gets “It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones. He’s dumbfounded but Aylin knows it. Please, please say someone shows Charlie the Carlton dance backstage.

Zach dismisses them to their rehearsal spaces. Aylin says she’s not going to let her relationship with Charlie get in her way. Nellie says she’s focusing on her strong suit—being emotional with music. Charlie is like “Fourth time again” before trying to learn the song. Seriously, Charlie, do the dance!

Coming Up: The audience members who grew up in the 90s will be doing the Carlton.

Gleekabe extra! The girls come out in their sports bra and shorts while Charlie runs around in his boxers. So the other boys strip to their boxers.

Time for the last chance performances. Ryan agrees with the judges’ picks after watching the footage. He watches it? They talk about Aylin laughing out when she should be serious. She comes out to sing “Take a Bow.” I do love her voice and can hear it on Glee. The judges applaud as Ryan asks where that girl was in the video. He says he never saw anyone laugh off a squishy. He tells her to be a leading lady, to have people rooting for her.

Charlie’s acting choices continue baffle the judges. He comes out to sing “It’s Not Unusual.” Children of the 90s, you ready? *Does the Carlton* Sorry, I told you I was sleep deprived, right? Anyway, Charlie starts singing a plea to be on Glee as he sings to the judges. And professes his love for Ryan…Okay? Ryan praises his song. But the show is not just a performance show and he has to bring it every week. Charlie says he’ll try to fit in but Ryan says he’s heard this the past 3 weeks. He doesn’t know if what Charlie is doing is Glee. Charlie says he wants to be on Glee.

Nellie is there because of insecurity, she needs confidence. She comes out to sing “If I Were a Boy.” The judges loved her performance. Ryan says it was a hard road but she shined in front of a microphone. Nellie says she had everything working against her when trying to pop out in a video. Zach says he’s done telling her she’s wonderful. That she’s being asked to be on Glee, not fighting to be on it. He tells her to act if she comes back and she responds “Fake it till you make it.”

The judges deliberate as everyone is silent backstage. Ryan makes his decision.

COMMERCIALS!

Robert comes in to announce the list is posted. The three take their walk to the list. Charlie wants everyone to stay but knows it’ll end with heartbreak. Aylin thinks she’s going home. Nellie doesn’t want to leave her friends. Charlie is not coming back. Aww, he was one of the best of the boys! Now I’m really going to have to force myself to call Bland “Blake.” He says he enjoyed the journey before saying good-bye to everyone. And that includes one last kiss to Aylin as he tells her to give nothing less than her best.

He sings “Keep Holding On” before stepping into the black.

Totally just noted that Robert is listed as the show’s host. Huh.

That…was a surprise. And I didn’t even see Aylin going into the bottom 3. I thought Michael was going to be there given his screen time. The performances were great, but I think the judges just grew tired of trying to corral him. But did they ever mention his ADHD? Because Charlie’s behavior seems pretty classic for someone with the condition. Is it fair of the show to accept someone, saying they are championing the underdogs and then demand they conform to conditions a…I don’t want to use the word “normal” but it’s the only one that comes to mind, so I apologize…person is expected to meet? Did they even try to meet him halfway? But I must applaud Charlie for not using his condition as an excuse like we’ve seen before on this show over the past two seasons. And I applaud Ali for saying she wanted to be slushied even though she could use her condition as an excuse. Too bad I just don’t like her voice.

PS: Jane Lynch is awesome. That is all.

Next week: Grant Gustin! He had to do something after Sebastian disappeared halfway through the season! Theme is theatricality!

Quote of the Episode
“Only in my wildest dreams.”—Michael’s response to if he’s ever worn competitive swimwear.
