Express Yourself

Okay, lame title is lame. I couldn’t help it!

Last time on Top Model: The girls were interviewed by Mario Lopez and divided into teams. Lisa’s team floundered a bit and Angelea was called out for being too boring where she thought she was professional. Bianca’s team won the challenge and received immunity at panel while Allison took home the whole kit-n-caboodle for answering better than anyone else. Then the girls had to pose together…on stilts. Bianca’s old fear of heights came back to haunt her, but she managed to pull out a stellar photo. In the end, Allison had the best photo of the saved girls while Alexandria had the one of the unsafe girls. Despite not being the worse photos, it came down to Angelea and Isis. Angelea was told to find a way to be professional yet still bring that “716” to her interviews and Isis was sent home. Eleven  girls remain, who won’t be an All-Star after tonight?

Wanna be on top?

Apparently they get mail as the girls open care packages. Alexandria and Kayla get clothes while Camille gets a box of work. Actually, her bills and talks about how she has no money coming in.
Kayla meanwhile isn’t feeling well. She thinks it’s a reaction to Isis leaving, but her heart’s racing. Laura asks her what she took and she responds with a lot of medicine. She gets Bianca and Bre, who take over. Bianca checks her mouth and the camera guy actually drops his camera. They switch to another feed as the camera guy and other crew members step in to help Kayla, who has started to gasp for breath. They say they have to take her to the hospital and I know someone somewhere is on the phone with Tyra.

Total model meltdown? The girl is sick and you call it a meltdown? The hell, Sparah?

The girls react to Kayla’s sickness after I guess they took her to the hospital. Dominique hopes Kayla feels better as Laura and Kayla return home sometime after 2 AM. Camille, Shannon and Lisa are there to greet her. She had heart problems and jokes that she might get eliminated for being a liability.

“It would be a crime to miss this action.” Someone guesses “acting.”

The Model Mobile takes them to Mr. Jay, who says they are auditioning for a role on one of the highest rated TV shows. NCIS? No, it’s CSI. Bianca talks about wanting to go into acting and how she doesn’t think the other girls have the chops to do it. Mr. Jay takes them to one of the autopsy room and introduces them to creator Anthony Zuiker, who pops up from a table. He says the winner will get a role in a fall episode. He gives them 30 minutes to memorize the scene. Kayla admits to being nervous over the words being used.

Lisa says she’s acted before but doesn’t know if she’ll be able to memorize the scene. Camille hopes to make it into a regular character. They got Dr. Robbins—David Robert Hall! Camille is actually shaking while Shannon totally forgets a line. Anthony does admit it’s a difficult show but it’s a challenge. Dominique just starts ad-libbing. Kayla gets an assist from Doc Robbins while Alexandria just blanks. Angelea gets the line reading right and Anthony praises her. Bre also rocks it as well. Lisa just blanks out and she worries about going home as we go to…

COMMERCIALS! So far, between the two who got the lines right, both Angelea and Bre could do well on CSI.

We come back to Lisa, who can’t remember her lines. Anthony gives her direction and tells her to be serious. She just makes up lines and says she wasn’t acting. Mr. Jay is surprised by her performance. Bre is singled out for being honest and then Angelea is praised for bring some of the “716.” But Bre wins! Yay, Bre!

TYRA MAIL! “When you’re a star, you have to express yourself.” Since Express is a sponsor, they figure it’s an Express photoshoot.

Mr. Jay meets them at a mansion. And they were right, but Express is there. Lisa Cavales, Chief Marketing Officer of Express, is on set. She talks to the wannabes about their brand. Mr. Jay tells them to tell a story: The girlfriend, the flirt, the socialite and the cool chick. And there are men! Angelea is happy to see them. The girls head out to hair and makeup. Lisa pretty much says she has to nail this to stay in the competition.

Angelea (socialite): Mr. Jay loves how she is standing and directs her to be sultry. Lisa loved Angelea’s socialite.

Kayla (Cool chick): Mr. Jay tells her not to do posey while she is trying to remain calm due to her heart.

Allison (Girlfriend): Not sure how they liked her.

Bre (socialite): Loves her laugh.

Dominique (Cool girl): Nails it.

Bianca (Flirt): She says she wants to push the limit of flirt. Mr. Jay doesn’t feel it and he pulls her aside. She says that this isn’t how the real world of modeling is like and says she is the model. Needle-scratch as Mr. Jay goes “mhmm.” She complains to Bre and Camille. Even Mr. Jay knows he is getting harsh on her.

COMMERCIALS!

Shannon (The Girlfriend): She is told to feed off her guy’s energy. Lisa isn’t too thrilled with her though.

Laura (The Flirt): She is a flirt.

Alexandria (Socialite): Huh, I thought she would give cool chick. Mr. Jay tells her to be ballsy.

Camille (Socialite): She falls down the steps. Mr. Jay says he wants Camille back.

Lisa (Cool chick): She keeps hopping up and down. Mr. Jay calls her a skater. Hey, why couldn’t we get Analeigh back? Anyway, Mr. Jay has the male models pick her up and they struggle a bit.

That’s a wrap!

Skulls and crossbones. Laura is doing a strange dance in the background as Camille cries that this is her last chance. Kayla talks about being there despite have a “mini-heart attack” two days prior. This is boring. Can we see Laura dance more?

COMMERCIALS!

LA! Tyra introduces the judges—Nigel and Andre. And this week’s guest judge is Anthony Zuiker. There are prizes. Laura is up and I do love Grandma Wanda Sue’s dress for her. Andre calls Laura the “star” of the picture. Tyra loves the sweetness yet sexuality. Kayla is next. Zuiker calls it “provacative.” Nigel loves her icy stare and calling it wonderful. Dominique is third and is teased for her audition. Nigel and Tyra loved her shot. Bre is next. Nigel thinks it’s a bit too commercial before Tyra points out she won the challenge. Alexandria follows. Zuiker doesn’t think her face isn’t confident while her body is. Tyra doesn’t think she got the age-range.

Allison is next. Nigel loves the disconnect between her in person and how she looks in her shots. Andre loves her facial expression. Camille’s shot isn’t so great. The male models outshine her while she talks about slipping. Lisa dances her way up to the judges and Tyra wonders where she was at her audition. Lisa says she didn’t have enough time. Andre calls her shot bogus and Lisa talks about how the models were talking about being hungry. Nigel says he is hearing a lot of excuses and Tyra tells her to take control. Bianca says she wanted to have a come-hither-look. Nigel doesn’t see it in hers, but rather one of the other models. Angelea is praised for her work on the challenge. Zuiker calls her shot “716” and he likes it. Tyra calls her “new money” and “fabulous.” Shannon is last while Nigel calls it commercial. Tyra says the shot is great and shows she has been a model.

Elimination after…COMMERCIALS!

The judges deliberate. Nigel loves Laura and Allison. He also loves Kayla’s body language while Anthony thinks she needs to go deeper. Andre isn’t happy with Lisa’s excuses while Nigel finds Bianca boring. Tyra calls Bianca amateur. Nigel is impressed by Angelea. Anthony says this is why he watches the show—because of the characters. Nigel doesn’t love Shannon’s commercial while Tyra wants more charisma. Anthony praises Bre in her auditions. While Tyra blathers on about a train, I actually go to…

COMMERCIALS!

ELIMINATION! First girl called is…Angelea. She struts up as Tyra points out she was in the bottom last week. Angelea is joined by: Dominique, Allison, Laura, Kayla, Shannon, Bre, Bianca, and Alexandria. That leaves Camille and Lisa in the bottom two. Lisa: “Daring” and “out of control.” Camille: “In control.” They both have excuses in common. Camille became background as she blamed falling. Lisa lost her personality somewhere this week. Tyra tells them they know Top Model doesn’t like excuses. But Lisa gets to stay because she has the potential to win.

Sorry, Camille. Tyra makes her shake it out. And then Camille talks over Tyra, who gives up giving her advice. Camille hugs the girls and blathers on about reinventing herself. She pats herself on the back and takes her signature walk out of the house.

I’m going to go to CSI and see if Bre is on this episode!

That was an interesting episode. I liked this challenge, though I always liked the acting challenges. I also like Anthony Zuiker as both the judge of the challenge and the guest judge on panel. He was a fresh eye, looking at them for a whole new set of skills in one and yet still able to look at them as models when viewing their photoshoots because he could very well be a client. The Express shoot was well enough and I quite like Lisa, who had a clear idea of what Express wanted it’s image to be.

While I never was as severe as Kayla, I have had rapid heart beat before. And this scared me as it came right after my physician listened to my chest when I was there for something else and asked, “So, how long have you had the heart murmur?” and my mother and I both responded: “The what now?” I can tell you the feeling can be scary and I had to cut on caffeine for a bit.  However, I understand Kayla’s attitude toward it. I’ve been sick often in the past and sometimes, it’s just “It happened, let’s move on” and it is easier to deal with if you can joke about it.

I’m not too sorry to see Camille go. I didn’t see her Cycle, but she’s a legend in the Top Model fandom if not necessarily for being good. And I feel disappointed slightly in Kayla. I feel for someone reason she isn’t as strong as she was in her cycle and is holding back even more. And it isn’t just her “brand” confusion. It’s as if the show took a young woman who knew who she was when she entered and was proud of it, made her realize a few personal truths she had to deal with, sent her back out into the real world and she came back trying to recapture that young woman who original came to the show.

(PS: Bre was not on this week’s episode of CSI. But there is still three months in the fall—the rest of October, November and December. We’ll see her soon)

Next week: The Kardashians invade Top Model! As does LaToya Jackson! Drama!

Quote of the Episode

“I have a job! Who knows what will happen from there.” –Bre, voicing the opinion of people suffering from the economy
The wannabes return home to let Allison admire her photo while Angelea recalls being in the bottom two. She talks about needing to find herself and promises to work on it. Lisa opens a bottle of wine and…Hey, it’s Cousin Itt. They show the old clips while Lisa is seen not drinking the wine while the others toast themselves.
