Nostalgia Nook: Pirates of the Dark Waters

Sorry for the delay! Next month will hopefully be on time!

I loved watching this show growing up. It was probably the darkest I watched. After all, I was generally watching the Disney Afternoon or My Little Ponies or CareBears or Rainbow Brite. Definitely bright and colorful. But at the same time, I loved Pirates of the Dark Waters.

Why? Well, let’s take a look, shall we?

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Pirates of the Dark Water takes place on an alien planet called Mer, which faces a threat from the titular Dark Water. A young man named Ren learns he is a prince and the only way to destroy the Dark Water is to collect the Thirteen Treasures. He must race against a dastardly pirate who wishes to control the Dark Water for his own gain.

Ren is not alone on his journey. He is joined by a talking monkey-like creature called Nibbler. I think most people remember Nibbler and his obsession with melons. Because of this, he can easily be lured into working for the bad guy. He always makes his way back to Ren, though. They are aided by Ioz, who wants riches. During their journeys, he forms a brotherly friendship with Ren. Rounding out this merry crew is the token female, Tula. She has powers over nature, which comes in handy.

The “dastardly pirate” competing with Ren is Bloth, who had captured Ren’s father several years earlier. He continues to hate Ren and will do anything to thwart the boy. But Bloth isn’t Ren’s only problem. There is also the Dark Dweller, who resides in the Dark Water. He has a right-hand man, Morpho, who works with Bloth.

And so the episodes are generally based around trying to get one of the treasures or outwit Bloth. And they were action packed. After episodes of “My Little Pony Tales” it was just what I needed.

Next month: Anastasia
