Sing It Out!

Last week on “The Glee Project”: Believability. Jenna chose Hannah as the winner of the homework challenge, giving her a larger role in the video. Alex breaks down in the studio, causing Nikki to play therapist. Lindsay next goes in and starts crying, causing Nikki to call her fake. During the video, Zach made fun of Damian’s eyebrows while Samuel just went to that intense place again. Damian was safe though while Samuel had to sing for Ryan along with Hannah and Lindsay. Despite winning the assignment, Hannah was sent packing. Who doesn’t make the final tonight? Find out!

Glee!

This week’s homework assignment is “Generosity”. The Gleekabes practice Lean on Me while Alex confesses he used to lean on Hannah. They can’t figure out what generosity means. Alex guesses that they “generously” (air quotes his) perform behind whoever is singing. Lindsay meanwhile is having an identity crisis after meeting Ryan.

Kevin McHale AKA Artie enters the room to meet the Gleekabes. He talks about how the cast supports each other and is like a family. Time for the song! This the perfect song for Damian’s voice, especially since it’s meant for a lower register. Lindsay and Alex seem to have an unintentional belt-off there. Kevin thinks Samuel didn’t connect at first. He doesn’t think Alex portrayed feeling while Lindsay did so excellently. Kevin loved Damian’s connection. Kevin wants a four-way tie but chooses Lindsay as the winner.

Lindsay celebrates her first win and gets Artie’s magic comb. Kevin reveals the song is “Sing” by My Chemical Romance. He then asks how many play instruments. It’s only Samuel, who can be his own one-man band. Kevin reveals he doesn’t either but lied at his audition while Robert laughs behind him. So he asks again and everyone takes the hint. Robert reminds them that next week is the final. It’s crunch time.

The Gleekabes enter the dance room and get assigned instruments. Samuel gets keyboard, Damian gets the drums and Alex can’t find his bass. Once Zach points it out, Lindsay gets the drums. Damian decides to fake it as they pretend to play. Has he never watched Declan? Never asked Neil about anything? Come on, you’re around a band for about four months out of the year! Zach says it was painful and confesses that they need to be more serious.

Okay.

Coming Up: Surprise guests!

Nikki meets up with the Gleekabes. Alex guesses the mystery guest will be A) Glee cast member, b) former contestant or c) someone off the street. In short—anyone. Instead, children walk in. They are from a program that keeps children in music even when their school cuts the music program. Samuel is paired with Alexander. Lindsay gets Lily. Damian gets Liam while I can’t begin to spell Alex’s partner’s name. Damian is excited that Liam plays the drums and gets hints from him. Lindsay and Lily bond over musicals and being Wendy in Peter Pan. Lindsay declares her his soul mate. Alex goes for the generic “favorite color” and has difficulty connecting. He claims his girl is shy. I don’t think that’s it.

Alex is first in the booth while Nikki declares Damian a “rock god.” I wouldn’t go that far, but she is impressed with him. Lindsay doesn’t nail it in the studio while I don’t think Samuel was even singing a tone. She tells him he’s a rock star while he confesses he doesn’t belt in front of people. The kids get to record with the Gleekabes as Nikki ends the session.

Erik enters to prep them for the video. I like how wardrobe matched outfits. Robert talks about the Gleekabes getting to be mentors and they are looking to see who connects. We see Lindsay working with Kevin on how to fake playing the guitar. Lindsay though doesn’t impress Zach while Nikki thinks Damian looks like he’s in pain. Nikki picks up that Alex isn’t connecting with his girl. Samuel and Alexander seem to be having fun. Nikki reminds Samuel to play in time at least. Time for the video!

Hey, we didn’t see Zach teaching them that choreography. Anyway, they wrap with a little cheer.

Coming Up: Phone call from Ryan!

Damian, Alex and Samuel talk in the boys’ dorm. Damian says he wants to experience next week while Samuel thinks it’ll be a little thing that may send one home. Oh, Lindsay’s there too. Anyway, Zach and Robert greet the Gleekabes. Robert says that Lindsay didn’t lip sync the right words while sometimes Damian looked like he was lip syncing. Meanwhile, Samuel struggled in the recording booth. Zach points out that Alex wasn’t so great as a mentor. Zach then reveals that Ryan has sent over co-creator Ian Brennan to see the last chance performances. And all four will be performing so Ian can see all of them. Ryan approved the songs.

Lindsay: “Defying Gravity”
Alex: “His Eye is on the Sparrow”
Damian: “I Gotta Be Me”
Samuel: “My Funny Valentine”

Samuel has no clue what his song is. He is the only one who is specifically given a song out of his comfort range. Odd. Neither Robert nor Zach will be with Ryan and Ian to speak up for them. Robert sends them to their rooms.

Damian talks about the slump he was in when Cameron left but he is now determined to go for this. Alex reveals that his song was sung at his father’s funeral. So he tells Nikki he hates the song and she understands a bit. She tells him that the song has joy and he needs to find it. Samuel is freaked out about not knowing the song. He works on hitting the high notes. Lindsay is still smarting from her last meeting with Ryan. Nikki visits her as Lindsay talks about trying to always in a good mood. She says she’s done doing that and Nikki says that’s a good place to be.

Coming Up: Ryan and Ian

Gleekabe extra: Samuel bonding with Alex

Ryan and Ian enter while Ryan talks up Alex. Alex comes out and reveals that it was sung at his father’s funeral. Alex was really toned down and it was actually nice. Ian asks about his high school experience and Alex admits he is picked on. Ian thinks he’s inspiring.

Next is Damian, who Ryan tells Ian is the underdog and most improved. Okay, who will sign a petition to get Sharon to add this song as well as that Elvis number he performed a few shows ago to a Celtic Thunder show? Damian pushes down the microphone stand and Ryan liked it. Damian tells Ian that he just wants to perform and he wakes up wanting to do it. Ian thinks Damian might be a good freshman.

Ryan isn’t too positive about Lindsay. That was a beautiful rendition of the song. Lindsay tells Ian that she can be a rocker. Lindsay tells Ryan she is done being the “perfect” person because it’s not her.  Ryan says he can never bring himself to cut her because she is needed in the group. To keep up appearances that you aren’t totally biased toward the guys, Murphy?

Samuel is last and Ryan goes on about his Christianity. Samuel’s performance was pretty good. We go on more about Christianity. Ryan says that the show is about the underdog and Samuel is not this. He asks Samuel when the last time he cried was. Samuel replies “Yesterday” and blathers on about God’s plan. Ian thinks he’s the most confusing while the other three seem authentic. Can we have Ian back next season, if there is one?

The Gleekabes wait while Samuel goes on about being vulnerable. Ian and Ryan debate before…Oh look, it’s Samuel’s one tear!

Huh, I’m in rare form tonight.

Robert posts the list. He goes to visit the Gleekabes to tell them. At least he didn’t say “It was a very tough decision” this week. After a group hug, they file out. Damian talks about going home a better person while everyone else wants to stay. Alex is safe, just from the look on his face. I can’t tell with Lindsay or Samuel. Damian made the final. So did Lindsay and…Samuel. WHAT THE HELL? No one got cut? They have a group hug before all performing “Keep Holding On.”

Oh, hey, there will be a second season.

Okay, so no one got eliminated? They are really sending four people into the final? I don’t know, that seems a bit overkill. Three people, okay, but four? If they can’t cut someone in the semifinal, how are they going to decide the winner? Anyway, next week is the final! I will be down south next weekend visiting with some family. I don’t know if I’ll have my computer or if I’ll even be able to watch the show. Long story short, I’ll probably be posting the recap the following day or so.

According to the poll I ran, Damian was the unanimous winner. So let’s cheer our Derry lad to the finish line!

Next week: “Don’t Stop Believing” while Ryan is the guest performer. Alex is in drag again. Someone wins.

Quote of the Episode:

“I couldn’t compete like this.”—Kevin about the competition.
