Nostalgia Nook: Halloweentown II

It’s October! You know what that means:

Pumpkin everything!
That chill in the air.
Ghosts, goblins and witches.
The skeleton war.
Ignoring the Christmas decorations already popping up in stores.

And of course…

HALLOWEEN!

Last year, I discussed the beloved Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) Halloweentown. This year, we’re going to discuss the sequel! Because of course there was a sequel. It was a popular movie. Disney couldn’t resist!

So grab your broomsticks and get ready for SPOILERS!

It’s been a couple years since we left the Cromwell witches. Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) has been training Marnie (Kimberley J. Brown) in her abilities while mom Gwen (Judith Hoag) has been embracing hers more and more.

This Halloween, Marnie throws a party for her friends. Including her new one, Kal (Daniel Kountz). She has a crush on him and decides to show him her grandmother’s room o’ magic. Of course this is a bad decision as Aggie’s spell book then goes missing. Aggie and Marnie go back to Halloweentown to investigate, but they only have until midnight on Halloween so they have to make it quick.

When they arrive in Halloweentown, it looks like they stepped into an old-time movie made before the invention of Technicolor. Aggie is concerned as they get in the cab. Our favorite wise-cracking, taxi driving skeleton is down right boring. They then run into Luke (Phillip Van Dyke) and he’s human again. He agrees to help them even though he has no desire to do much else.

Meanwhile, Gwen meets Kal’s handsome father, Alex (Peter Wingfield). She starts falling for him but Sophie (Emily Roeske) and Dylan (Joey Zimmerman) have their suspicions. But they also have to help their grandmother and sister. They reveal that Kal is really the son of Kalabar and is seeking revenge for what happened to his father. Aggie and Marnie need to get back STAT.

They head back to Aggie’s to try and find her spare magic book. Luke comes along, though he isn’t much help. But despite him being utterly unhelpful, Aggie and Marnie…still don’t find the book. They try to remember the spell and Marnie mispronounces one word as “Trapa.” Luke turns back into a goblin and gets his color back, as well as his spark. He is more gung-ho about helping Marnie and Aggie as they take a ride to a creature that collects lost items in hopes he has the book.

In the end, he doesn’t. He is also under the spell so it took a while for them to get that out of him. Gort, the hoarder, says he sold it years ago but can’t recall to whom. Things then get worse when Aggie falls under the spell, turning gray as she sits down to sort socks with Gort. Marnie and Luke have to figure out what to do. They managed to go back in time and return to when Gort was a brightly colored hoarder and not a graying sock collector. But he still sold the book almost half a century prior to that point. However, he does remember he sold it to Kal.

Marnie and Luke try to figure out Kal’s plan and how to get back to their time. They eventually decide to ride a giant timeline using Marnie’s new broom, which she’s quite proud to show off. She and Luke go back and they figure out that the key is what Marnie had said earlier when she undid the gray spell on Luke. She tries it again on her grandmother and Aggie is returned to normal. They race back to the town square so they can stop Kal in the mortal world.

Speaking of the mortal world, Sophie and Dylan have to stop Kal from enacting the second part of his revenge: Turning the people of this world into the monsters he felt they mocked every Halloween. He’s going to cast the spell at midnight on Halloween and turn everyone into their costumes. So Sophie and Dylan have to stop him and convince their mother that her beau isn’t who he says he is. Gwen is reluctant to believe them…until Sophie conjures a fly. It flies around Thomas and his frog tongue pops out, snatching the fly. Gwen waves her hand and Thomas devolves into a bunch of frogs. She agrees to help her children stop Kal.

But it appears Kal’s evil plot may be too far gone to be stopped. The portal to Halloweentown closes as everyone wearing a costume—Gwen included—becomes their costume. Sophie and Dylan have to figure out a way to rescue everyone—and their grandmother and sister. Together, they force a new portal between Halloweentown and our world open. Aggie and Marnie return, facing off against Kal with Sophie, Dylan and Gwen. They manage to save the day and stop Kal.

The family returns to Halloweentown and undoes the Gray Spell, returning everyone back to normal. It’s also decided to leave the portal between the worlds open for good. Yay!

So, happy endings all around again!

This wasn’t bad for a second outing. It had a good plot and didn’t try to retread the first one. Instead, it built on it. The first one was about Marnie discovering this new world. Now, it was about protecting both it and her old world.

Have a happy Halloween!
