Under Da Sea, Under Da Sea!

Last time on “FaceOff”: Fourteen contestants competed to be the next big thing in SXF makeup. McKenzie Westmore came back and brought Glenn, Patrick and Ve with her! Conor even stopped by to help judge the foundation challenge. Jerry won, granting him immunity. For the spotlight challenge, the contestants were divided between men vs. women and then split into teams. They had to reimagine characters from the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.” Some lackluster Tin Men followed and a few scarecrows that didn’t appear in my nightmares as thankfully, my dream catcher worked. Brea was determined the winner for her work on the Wicked Witch while Nix and Greg fell in the bottom two. In the end, Greg was sent home. Thirteen contestants remain, who will pack up tonight? Find out!

LA! We start off in the house as Nix and Beki talk. Nix feels bad over Greg’s dismissal and is still upset about Jerry’s behavior. Beki feels angry that she allowed Brea to take credit and thus win last week.

McKenzie looks red. But she’s in the Aquarium of the Pacific. For the spotlight challenge, the contestants will be paired up and will have to pick a fish. Heather is psyched because she studied marine biology.

Team 1: Sue and Rayce (and Brea): Leafy Sea Dragon
Team 2: Jerry and Nix: Sea turtle
Team 3: Miranda and Beki: Leafy Sea Dragon
Team 4: Ian and RJ: Zebra Shark
Team 5: Matt and Tara: Lyretail Fairy Basslet
Team 6: Heather and Athena: Lionfish

Brea is nervous that she wasn’t paired off. McKenzie tells her as odd woman out, she gets to pick the team she gets to join. She decides to join Team 1. Rayce and Sue seem excited. McKenzie then tells them that during Last Looks, their models will be submerged in water. So the body paint and prosthetics will have to be waterproof. Everyone is like “We’re doomed.”

Everyone races through the aquarium to find their fish. Nix and Jerry both agree that they are Team Do-Not-Like so they decide to work on their own things. Meanwhile, Beki and Miranda end up doing the same fish as Sue, Rayce and Brea. Brea’s like “Oh no you aren’t!” And Beki’s like “Whatever.”

Studio Day 1. Heather is happy to find a fish tank so they can test if their designs are waterproof. So everyone dives into the design phase. Team Homeboy (RJ and Ian) decide to turn their shark into a lawyer (GET IT?). Jerry and Nix breakdown what they need for their design as some held into sculpting. Tara talks about Matt liking to slip sex symbolism into his makeup. She has no problem with that. Sue explains their design is a sea goddess. Okay. Team Do-Not-Like are surprisingly working well together.

Beki is sculpting a duck nose and Miranda asks to fix it. Beki thinks it looks like a chicken. Beki is hostile and Miranda asks for help rather than a scolding. Beki says she needs to see what’s going on in Miranda’s brain…

COMMERCIALS!

We come back to the Beki-Miranda feud. Beki claims that Miranda’s shutting down. They leave and we come to Day 2. Miranda and Beki work with latex as Beki asks what Miranda does. Beki wants to know her credentials. Miranda names some stuff and Beki asks why she gets defensive. Miranda replies because it was her tone.

Patrick and McKenzie pay a visit. Sue is excited to see him. Ian boasts about the suit. Patrick notes Heather and Athena are making their fish look fishlike. He asks Beki and Miranda how their working together is going. Miranda says they have a plan and are executing it. Beki says “You can’t just lie!” Beki, have you seen reality TV? If you were to say, “Miranda is an idiot and we are butting heads” then YOU get in trouble for throwing her under the bus. And then Miranda hates you. It’s called diplomacy—learn it.

Look at Jerry and Nix. But Miranda asks for help and Beki just walks off, feeling more anxious. Miranda gets aggressive as we go to…

COMMERCIALS

Miranda and Beki are still squabbling. I think we will now call them “Team Bitch.” Day 2 is over. At the house, Beki talks to Nix. She goes on about how Miranda is threatened. Sue, Brea and Matt talk about it. Sue is shocked that Beki told Miranda she was incompetent. Brea also knows that Beki claims to let Brea get the credit to help her. Brea’s like “I didn’t need her help. I get it on my own.”

Day 3. It’s application time as the models arrive. Nix learns and asks to shave his model’s legs. He’s cool with it. Team Homeboy’s model likes their concept. Sue is worried about all their attachments. Heather and Athena worry about time and everything needed. As Athena does the paintwork, their model keeps nodding off. Tara starts to worry about her edges. She and Matt go into “fix mode.” Nix starts airbrushing and Jerry worries it might be too cartoony. With one hour to go, everyone rushes around to get as much done as possible. Tara decides to hide the edges with fabric.

Coming Up: Time to dunk the models!

Everyone arrives for Last Looks. Miranda asks for help painting while Heather and Athena have to lose their fins. Time’s up!

The contestants go to the reveal stage. McKenzie welcomes our judges: Glenn, Ve and Patrick. First, they look at the makeup outside the water. And Tara and Matt’s design looks frickin’ unbelievable. Next we see Jerry and Nix’s sea turtle—soon to be appearing at Disney…No, wait, Disney Imagineering wouldn’t put out shoddy work like that. Heather and Athena’s look is pretty good. For all the bitching, Beki and Miranda turned out a good design. And the suit looks like it swallowed Team Homeboy’s model. RJ is thrilled with the smiles, but I only see Ve smiling. And she’s always smiling.

The models submerge one by one in the tank for closer inspection. And as frickin’ unbelievable it looks on land, Tara and Matt’s design is even better in the water. The judges are pleased. Next, the sea turtle goes for a swim. But the model couldn’t stay down.

COMMERCIALS!

The judges aren’t too thrilled with Nix and Jerry’s design. Team Uno’s work looks better in water than out. As does Heather and Athena. When Team Homeboy’s shark jumps in, the suit pops up. Team Bitch’s design looks pretty good as well.

Team Bitch and Team Uno are both safe. McKenzie explains that the rest are the best and the worst. Heather and Athena are first. Glenn says he didn’t like the makeup. But it’s a psyche out—he loved it. Ve says it was successful, especially in the water. Patrick liked their choices. Team Do-Not-Like stepped forward and Ve calls their work a fiasco. And their turtle a turd. Jerry confirms everything was glued on. Patrick questions Nix’s coloring. Nix throws Jerry under the bus while Jerry says they are equally responsible.

Team Awesome (Tara and Matt) step forward. Patrick tells them they did incredible work. Glenn calls it fantastic. Ve praises the use of the fabric and how it enhanced the makeup. Team Homeboy is next. RJ says he’s happy with how it turned out but the hands could’ve been better. Glenn agrees with the last bit. Ve says they should’ve sewn him in but it covered an excellent makeup job. Ian says he’d be pissed if he went home over poor wardrobe decisions.

The judges debate it. They praise Athena’s and Tara’s paint jobs. Patrick think that Team Did-Not-Like played it risky than safe. And Team Homeboy was a mess. The judges have decided!

Everyone is brought back out. Glenn reveals the top looks to be Team Lionfish and Team Awesome. The winning team is…

After the COMMERCIALS!

…Team Awesome. And Matt wins it all! Everyone applauds while Team Awesome and Team Lionfish return backstage. Team Homeboy and Team Did-Not-Like stand before the judges. So, who is going home is…Nix. Glenn feels he didn’t show off his body painting work. McKenzie dismisses him. He shakes Team Homeboy’s hands and Jerry whispers “Sorry” to him. Everyone is sad to see he’s the one going home. Nix promises to work harder.

So, that was week 2. I liked the challenge, it was interesting. I wonder why they keep working in pairs, though. Can the show not afford enough models? Fans clamored for more pairings? Producers hoped for another flirtation a la Conor-Megan? More drama? (I think it’s the last one). Either way, it’s hard to judge each individual when we keep seeing collaborations. Still liking Tara and Rayce. And Sue, she’s growing on me.

Next week: NUDITY! SIRENS!

Quote of the Episode:

“You don’t need to prove yourself to me. You need to prove yourself to the nation because you are on FaceOff.”—Beki to Miranda
