Galavant: Realizing Some Truths

When we last left our heroes before the commercial break, they had been captured by Richard after Galavant and Sid discovered Isabella had betrayed them. Sentenced to death, Galavant is saved when Magdalena switched him for the Chef, who thought he was on his way to a romantic dinner with the queen’s handmaiden Gwynne. Thankfully, the king realized the switch before he hanged his favorite Chef.

Now what?

Galavant can’t believe that Magdalena has saved him from the hangman’s noose. He believes she still loves him and starts singing about it. She’s not too keen about the singing—I guess something they have in common.

(She's not impressed)
But she joins in, revealing that she’s not going to give up being queen. She tells Galavant to stay with her and they can live in luxury in the palace as lovers. Galavant, though, doesn’t just want to be her plaything and he’s not too sure he likes the person Magdalena has become. She has him returned to the dungeons.

(The Tango Magdalena)
Meanwhile, Richard tries to figure out how he can stand up to his queen, Galavant and be more firm. Especially once Magdalena seems to steal Gareth from him. So the Chef takes him to a magician who can help him named Xanax. Who is played by Ricky Gervais. This is going to be great, I think.

(Hi, Ricky!)
Back in the dungeons, Magdalena has a little conversation with Isabella. Gareth tries to interject but Magdalena snaps at him that he’s just a dog. She leaves the dungeons and everyone there has a gripefest about her—including the Jester, who is hanging from the wall. At least he’s still in the show, right?

(The poor jester)
Xanax gives Richard and the Chef his special brew which will help him open his mind and discover the source of his insecurity. This leads to a strange song reminiscent of “The Tunnel Song” from Willy Wonka and contains references to Mary Poppins and Harry Potter. It kinda looks like a real interesting trip. A door appears and they go through to the past.

(Trippy)
Richard and Chef end up in the royal court the day Richard’s father died. The Queen says that the new king is her oldest son, Kingsley. Yes, Richard has a brother. But he refuses to take up the sword and be king. He wants to roam the countryside, making trouble and sowing his wild oats. Which means that young Richard or “Dickie” becomes king. The royal court parts to show the young boy standing there, holding his blanket. An advisor orders young Gareth to protect the king. Gareth is like “I’m only ten” but he agrees.

(Look at young Gareth!)
Dickie is about to take the sword but Kingsley decides he at least wants the sword. He humiliates his brother and leaves.

This leads to Richard’s epiphany. He had never gotten over the humiliation of his brother in front of the court and the fact he was always the second choice. It had to stop. He needed to stand up for himself and be the first choice. Knowing what he had to do, Richard tries to find the exit but it’s very high up. He and Chef have some climbing to do. When they return, Xanax reveals he can’t let Richard ride a horse for another hour due to safety concerns. So they go back through the door for a tour of Richard’s childhood bedroom.

Isabella continues to ask for Galavant’s forgiveness and comforts him over his realization that he’s been in love with just a memory of Magdalena. She tells him that he deserves better. Maybe a princess who has made him better and helped him with his adventures and who is of undetermined race. AKA her. Galavant starts to realize this. They start to sing a love song that once again is realistic about love but at this point, I want the traditional, saccharine love ballad. Just one, show. Please?

(It's love)
They end up standing in the middle of the dungeons. No one had ever locked the doors. This is going to work in their favor. Especially once Gareth leaves to go back to Richard’s service. Richard is glad to have him back and to hear his loyal friend is still loyal.

(Reunited!)
Richard starts to flex his new found confidence. He tells Magdalena they are through and orders Gareth to throw her in the dungeons. I’m sure everyone down there would just love to see her. But she manages to stall by mentioning her guest. It’s Kingsley, Richard’s brother, and he wants everything Richard has.

(What a twist!)
Uh oh.

I’m sad tonight will be Galavant’s final episodes and I hope it gets a second season. It’s been too much fun to give up!
