Galavant: A Pirate’s Life for Me

Anyone else disoriented by the start of this episode? I felt like the previous episode needed a better, more proper ending. We go from Sid telling his parents they need to talk to our singing heroes on the road again. It was jarring and I was like “What just happened?”

Our trio starts with a song about how they are the best of friends now and are working well together. Except when they are getting on each other’s nerves. Like how Galavant eats all the raisins out of the trail mix, how Sid feels likes a third wheel and how Isabella snores at night. (She also eats with her mouth open). But otherwise, they’re doing alright as they reach the waterway which will lead them to Valencia. Isabella suggests they go another way due to bandits but Galavant doesn’t listen to her.

(There might be some tension)
Guess what happens? If you guessed they get captured by bandits—you’re right! Congrats!

(Oops)

Our singing heroes are taken to the pirates next to the sea. Seems their boat got stuck and they can’t get it back into the water. But the pirates, led by guest star Hugh Bonneville, still try to be terrifying. They tie up our heroes and start going on about Isabella’s tendency to chew with her mouth open. She defends it to Galavant and Sid, explaining she has a deviated septum and can’t breath through her nose.

(Hail, Pirate Lord Bonneville!)
The Pirate Lord Bonneville takes Galavant off to the side and reveals that he knows Galavant. So Galavant offers to help the pirates fix their ships in exchange for passage to Valencia. Pirate Lord Bonneville offers instead to off the “Mouthbreather” AKA Isabella. In a touching few moments, Galavant keeps insisting that Pirate Lord Bonneville not call her that as he continues to make his case for getting rid of Isabella.

(Pirate Lord Bonneville--not a fan of Princess Isabella)
Let’s check in with Richard’s court in Valencia. He’s still stewing after learning that the Queen is cheating on him with the jester. So what does he do? He asks the Jester for help in being funny so he can win the Queen’s heart. The Jester is no idiot and he agrees to help.

Richard tries. And the Jester is doing his best to help the king, but Richard is just hopeless. He practices every joke in the book. His best trick seems to be a pie in the face. Always works, right? Maybe not for poor King Richard. God bless him.

The Valencians and Magdalena are forced to go to the king’s comedy show. He dies on stage. The Jester has him go straight for pie in the face. Chef runs up to the stage and Richard plants the pie on Gareth. Everyone loves it. Richard calls for more pies to throw at Gareth. But at a look from his guard, Richard decides not at Gareth. Looks like some Valencians are going to get pies to their faces. But I don’t think anyone minds—the king’s happy that he got Magdalena to laugh and it’s probably the most exciting thing to happen since Richard invaded.

(Anything for comedy)
Together with our singing heroes, the singing pirates are able to repair their ship and return to the water. Pirate Lord Bonneville makes for Valencia and Galavant gives Isabella trail mix that he hasn’t eaten all the raisins out of. She’s touched…and feeling guilty. So she comes clean about working for Richard. But Galavant got distracted and didn’t hear her.

(Isabella is conflicted)
What distracted him? Valencia! He’s getting closer to Magdalena.

Speaking of Magdalena, she approaches Steve—that’s the Jester’s name, which she didn’t know and learned from Richard—and wants some sexytimes. But now that the Jester and the King are friendly-ish, he doesn’t feel right sleeping with Magdalena. She says he’s no longer useful to her and has him thrown in the dungeons. It kinda makes you wonder what she was like with Galavant. Was she this power hungry and manipulative? Did Galavant not see it because he was so vain? Hmm…

I don’t know. I think for me, this was the weakest of the episodes so far. The pirates were funny and their song good but I don’t know. This just didn’t leave an impression on me. But if this is the show at its weakest, then it’s still pretty good.

Next week: Ricky Gervais and Weird Al Yankovic.
