Galavant: An Interrupted Moment

Last week on “Galavant:” Our singing heroes reached Valencia’s shores and took a break at the Monastery of the Brothers of Our Father of Perpetual Singing, led by Brother Weird Al. Isabella was racked with guilt over having to lead Galavant into a trap while Richard was giddy over the prospect of capturing Galavant at last. Magdalena decided to take matters into her own hands. And Chef was in love. But he had to stand up his lady love when Magdalena switched him for Galavant on the gallows. She offers Galavant a chance to live in the palace as her boy toy but he refuses, seeing her for what she is. He also starts to see Isabella in a new light as those in the dungeons plot. Richard goes with Chef to see Ricky Gervais and realizes his insecurities stem from his brother, Kingsley. And guess who Magdalena has summoned? Kingsley!

Things are heating up for this finale!

We open during Galavant’s childhood, when he has a moment with his father. Who is played by Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Anthony Stewart Head. Sir Giles assures his son that he’ll be a great knight one day but he has to shut out emotions and thoughts. They’ll only distract him. Then he’ll have his moment in the sun. Sir Giles starts to sing but is interrupted by his off-screen wife nagging him. As he prepares to do the chores, he tells his son to never get married.

(Hello, Sir Giles)
Years later, in the dungeons, Galavant draws a map to plot out his plan to escape. Isabella, meanwhile, is focused on getting him to impress her parents. So far, not so good. They tell her it doesn’t matter—they got word out to her cousin Harry and he should be coming to save them. And Isabella shouldn’t forget that Harry’s her betrothed. Well that’s an important tidbit Galavant should know, right?

(They have it under control)
Anyway, Richard is still reeling from the return of his brother. He says Kingsley can’t just take anything but Kingsley just bullies him in return.

(Magdalena is in her glory)
If Richard wants his throne back, he’s going to have to duel Kingsley for it. But since they are royals, someone else is going to duel in their stead. The prisoners are brought up to hear this and Kingsley chooses Gareth to be his champion. Gareth and Richard are surprised. In the end, Richard chooses Galavant when no one else volunteers to be his champion.

(Yep, no one wants this job)

(This just screams "Wait, what?")
The kingdom shows up for the duel and Chef sells some tasty treats. He comes upon Gwynne and tries to apologize for standing her up. She’s not really into his apologies, saying that no matter who wins the fight, they’re all dead anyway. So she’s just going to enjoy her last few hours of living by herself. Dejected, Chef moves on.

(I just want to give him a hug)
Isabella, in shackles, talks with Galavant but he pushes her aside to abide by his father’s wishes. The entire episode, he’s been trying to sing a song about his moment in the sun and it keeps getting interrupted. It’s quite funny. He prepares to fight Gareth when someone interrupts the duel. It’s Isabella’s cousin Harry and…he’s only six years old, it seems. He’s also adorable.

(See? Adorable!)
Almost adorable as Roland over on Once Upon a Time. Anyway, Harry reveals that he and Isabella are engaged to Galavant but she’s too busy coming up with an idea to deal with Galavant’s reaction. She says that they have to have a dinner befitting the arrival of such a royal. Kingsley agrees. The duel is postponed for now.

Down the dungeons, they hear the cheering for free food and mistake it for “Galavant’s dead.” Sid starts to mourn but reminds himself that he has to save everyone now. So he takes the King and Queen as well as the Jester and leaves. They sneak through the hallways following Galavant’s map though the King and Queen insist they know better ways. After nearly colliding with a guard, Sid agrees.

Chef is busy making a large banquet with short notice when Gwynne pops down for a visit. She’s been thinking over everything she said and she’s realized a way for the peasants to come out on top for once: Kill the royals. Gwynne reveals a book of poisons that Chef could use in his food. They’ll all die at the banquet and then she and Chef could live safe from fear. They even sing about it. It’s quite upbeat despite the fact they’re singing about murder. Chef agrees as they sit on Valencia’s thrones.

(All hail the new King and Queen!)
Everyone gathers as Galavant and Isabella talk again. This time, he actually makes it through his song. It isn’t much more than what we’ve heard so far in this episode. Meanwhile, everyone sits down to eat. Richard starts sneezing and down the table, Magdalena dashes off. Everyone else starts itching or sneezing or other reactions. High above, Gwynne asks when they’ll start dying. Chef reveals he couldn’t do it. So instead, he used his vast knowledge of the royals to make food they are allergic too. So they’ll be inconvenienced and they can watch. Gwynne is disappointed she won’t be seeing dead royals but she’s touched by the Chef’s kindness. That’s something she’ll cherish for the rest of her short life which seems to be getting shorter by the minute.

As Chef and Gwynne are caught, the gang from the dungeons burst in. Sid is relieved to find Galavant alive. Meanwhile, Isabella and Galavant have a moment that leads Harry to seemingly let her go. Richard decides to man up and decides to fight his own duel. Kingsley is still letting Gareth fight for him. This now pits best friend against best friend. Oh no!

(What a twist!)
Will Richard fight Gareth? Will Galavant ever kiss Isabella? Will Chef and Gwynne live happily ever after? Find out in the next episode to be recapped tomorrow!
