FaceOff: The Woods are Just Trees, the Trees are Just Wood

Last time on Face Off: Aliens were among us! McKenzie and Glenn challenged the contestants to create their own using ancient cultures and landmarks. Doc struggled trying to combine his aquatic alien with the Easter Island heads. Gwen struggled with an application piece that fell apart. Sasha struggled as well but still rose to the top with her simple yet beautiful alien. But Stella was the week’s winner, stunning the judges with her use of colors. Gwen and Doc fell into the bottom, but Gwen was ultimately sent home. Twelve contestants remain—who will be eliminated tonight? Find out!

FaceOff!

We start in the house with some of the contestants asking Stella what it was like to win. She says it was amazing. Jason hopes to experience it as he’s tired of being in the bottom. He wants to show people what he can do.

Then they head to the warehouse turned lab. Models are standing there in elaborate costumes and capes. Clearly they didn’t get the memo from Edna Mode:

McKenzie confirms that their foundation challenge is about superheroes. She then introduces them to Mike Elizalde, who worked on Fantastic Four, X-Men and Hellboy II. He and McKenzie talk about how some superheroes are linked to their costumes, which helps define them. The contestants will pick a costume and create a superhero. Mike tells them to tell a story. McKenzie says the winner will win immunity. Ready, set, GO!

Keaghlan works on “Deadly Diamond” while Drew takes inspiration from the feathers in his model’s costume. Rachael creates an alien assassin who falls in love with Earthlings. Cig greates “Intensatron”: Part man, part machine, all intensity. Vince is drawn to a purple costume and creates a superhero who can change his skin color. TIME!

Doc introduces Paul Fincher or Birdcage. Mike thinks it feels like a mask but the paint job is well done. He likes Vince’s paint job as well. Rachael shows off her superhero and Mike likes it. He calls Sasha’s “beautiful” and praises how she did the black paint job. We flash through the other’s heroes as Sasha says there were amazing superheroes in the room.

So who wins the challenge? Vince or Rachael? It’s Rachael! He felt she created a full character with a story. Rachael has immunity. She says Mike was nice and she loved having his feedback. McKenzie dismisses them.

They return the next day to find McKenzie and a tree in the lab. She greets them. She talks about movies that portray trees with human qualities. She says they will create a tree character inspired by real life species. They will be in teams and they get to pick their partners!

Doc and Jason: Bristlecone Pine
Sasha and Stella: White Birch
Vince and Damien: Giant Sequoya
Dina and Rachael: Banyan
George and Keaghlan: Silk Floss
Cig and Drew: Weeping Willow

McKenzie says that the trees either have to be twisted trees. So they were assigned maladies suffered by trees.

Doc and Jason: Lightning strike
Cig and Drew: Pests
Dina and Rachael: Fungus
Vince and Damien: Rot
Sasha and Stella: Burl
George and Keaghlan: Choking vines

She says that the judges will be looking for the trees and maladies to be reflected.

The contestants pick their models and get to work. Jason and Doc are certain they will make something awesome. They create a tree that is the guardian of the desert but he’s lazy so the gods punish him with lightning. Dina and Rachael create a real twisted tree.

Meanwhile, Sasha and Stella make their sacred tree who is sad that the white man scared his people away. She also uses the fact birch trees are called the “watching trees” to help their portrayal. Vince wants to create a zombie tree.

Michael and McKenzie pop in to check on them. Michael thinks that Dina and Rachael’s sculpt looks more like vines or fire. Dina is worried since Rachael has immunity.

Coming Up: Problems! Judges!

Dina says she and Rachael have to start over. George and Keaghlan say their tree is an environmentalist who merged with a tree. Michael gives them some advice before moving on to Cig and Drew. They talk about bugs and Michael mentions holes. He suggest foam to Vince and Damien. Michael thinks Jason and Doc can go bigger and tells Sasha and Stella to not make their tree so human. The Westmores take their leaves.

Everyone goes back to their sculpting. Cig and Drew are trying to figure out what to do with the weeping willow arms. Rachael understands that Dina’s worried because she’ll be on the chopping block and is supportive. Doc and Jason work on the mold but they have concerns at TIME! Doc is worried he’ll be in the bottom again.

Day 2! Everyone returns to continue working. Dina and Rachael work on their cowl and chest piece. George and Keaghlan pull out their pieces and are happy. They have enough time for fabrication. George says the tree has a feminine curve so they are making a pencil skirt for their creature. He and Keaghlan dance it out. Where’s a gif of dancing baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy when you need one?

Jason and Doc continue to work on their tree while Drew and Cig have problems with their molds. They get cracks and it might break. Cig says they are in a lot of trouble as we go to…

COMMERCIALS!

Cig and Drew stop opening their mold and try something else. They finally open it but worry about the time they lost. Cig sends Drew to start fabricating the branches as he cleans the mold.

Stella works on creating the birch bark that peels off. Sasha is impressed. But the hand molds are not useable so Sasha has to figure something out. Vince and Damien have a difference of opinion on the tree colors, which worries Vince. Sasha moves on with the hands, making them out of mattress foam.

As time ticks down, Doc’s arm molds keep breaking on him. He and Jason panic at TIME! Doc’s ready to pack his bags and go home.

Day 3! Everyone dashes into the lab to finish their trees. Damien and Vince have trouble with their second skin on their cowl but decide to turn it into rot.

The models arrive and everyone starts applying their pieces. Some start working on their paint jobs. Stella and Sasha are pleased with their work. Doc and Jason get their cowl on and Jason starts on his paint job. He also figures out a solution to their arm problem. Cig and Drew just need to apply branches at TIME!

Coming Up: Problems! Judges! I’m a broken record!

Cig and Drew work on the branches as they worry about making sure they get it time. Jason and Doc need to fix their model’s legs but Doc is starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Stella is still unsure about the hands but likes the costume. Vince and Damien work on their paint. The music gets faster and faster until we get to TIME! Damien is impressed by their creation.

McKenzie welcomes them to the Reveal Stage. There are judges: Glenn, Lois, and Neville. She reminds them of their challenge before bringing out the models.

My favorites: Stella and Sasha, Dina and Rachael, Cig and Drew—even without the branches. Drew tries to figure out what happened.

The judges take a closer look. They love Sasha and Stella’s tree. Glenn says there was a lot of work done on George and Keaghlan’s tree. They praise Doc and Jason’s work. Neville doesn’t think it looks like tree bark. Rachael knows she has immunity and is going to be upset if Dina goes home as we go to…

COMMERCIALS!

The judges look at Cig and Drew’s work and aren’t impressed. Lois can tell something is missing.
George, Keaghlan, Dina and Rachael are all safe. Dina is probably doing a happy dance backstage as we speak. Jason and Doc step before the judges. Glenn praises their work. Lois says she loves the small details and calls it “excellence.” Neville isn’t too sure about the lightning but praises their cheek sculpts. Cig and Drew are next. Maybe we’ll find out what happened to her branches. Lois asks about if something is missing. They say they made branches but they went missing. Lois says the color needs work. Neville agrees. Glenn asks about what they did. Drew says he did the branches and Glenn says its brave of him to take credit for something Glenn can’t see.

Sasha and Stella step forward. Neville says he’s pretty impressed. He can tell it is birch but he’s not sure about the hands. Glenn asks them to remove a glove and says just a paint job would’ve been good but otherwise, the tree is good. Lois praises it as well. Damien and Vince are last. Glenn says it would be good…for an office Halloween party. He says the trunk should’ve been a head. Lois doesn’t think it’s cohesive. Neville says there is some good work but is not sure about the left eye. Vince says it’s the rot.

McKenzie dismisses them so the judges can deliberate. They love Jason and Doc’s tree. Neville says Sasha and Stella’s tree had a great read and portrayed their story. Lois says it’s a shame that part of the makeup wasn’t there. Neville points out that Drew dropped the ball on the branches, he did work on the face which was the best part. They aren’t pleased with Vince’s and Damien’s work.

So which team won this week?

Find out after COMMERCIALS!

The fan favorite winner this week is Stella! Congrats, Stella!

Anyway, which team won? Doc and Jason. Congrats, you two! They hug it out. But there can only be one winner. And that is…Jason! Glenn praises his detail work and congratulates him on his comeback. Jason says that he has this win and they can’t take it from him. Jason is dismissed along with Doc, Stella and Sasha.

The other four step before the judges. Who is going home? It’s Vince. Wait, really? The hell? Boo! Damien, Cig and Drew are sent backstage. They hug Vince before leaving. Lois tells him he has great talent and Glenn wishes him luck.

Vince goes to say goodbye and pack up his kit. He calls makeup effects his first love and leaves.
