Please Don’t Leave…

Last week on “The Glee Project”: Theatricality! And who better to help them then a guest judge with a Tony Award. Idina Menzel, who played Shelby on the show, judged a performance of “Bad Romance” and chose Alex to be the winner. He got a starring role in the video “We’re Not Gonna Take It”. Ellis had difficulty with the choreography and her attitude, fought with Lindsay and subsequently landed in the bottom three. She was joined by McKynleigh and Matheus. However, despite McKynleigh being told Ryan didn’t know how to write for her, Ellis’ attitude led to her being cut. Ten Gleekabes remain, who will go home tonight?

Glee!

The Gleekabes enter the classroom to learn their homework assignment is Vulnerability. THey have to learn Pink’s “Please Don’t Leave Me.” Hannah says she hopes she can put aside her class clown persona and be serious. Emily, meanwhile, says that this is her last shot and she wants to show a different side.

So, who is this week’s guest judge? A whistle blows and you know they think it’s Jane Lynch, but it’s really Dot-Marie Jones AKA “Coach Beiste.” Lindsay is over the moon. Emily says she is scared and excited at the same time. Dot-Marie says she put some of her experiences as Coach Beiste—she is called sir sometimes. She’s 100% woman. Time for the song! It’s interesting they gave Lindsay the “I can be so mean when I want to be” line after last week’s episode. Marissa was quite awesome and I quite liked Damian’s choice.

Robert and Dot-Marie applaud their rendition. Dot-Marie tells Lindsay that she has a beautiful voice but that it felt forced. Lindsay argues back that it wasn’t forced and Dot replies that’s how she read it. Lindsay says it felt real. Robert takes a pin to her ego and tells her it isn’t about how she feels but how the judges feel. Emily loves that Lindsay got called fake as Dot-Marie praises her. Robert loves the new side she showed. Dot tells Matheus that he broke her heart. This week’s winner is Matheus. She says his subltedy  and vulnerability touched her.

Robert announces this week’s video is to “Mad World.” Damian talks about how new this is to him because he doesn’t have the other Celtic Thunder lads there to support him. And did they cut Ryan out of that picture on purpose because he left the group? It’s a new promo shot since Emmett’s there, but I don’t think it was Neil on the other side of George. He says now he has to be himself and put across the emotions. Robert says they will have to expose one of their deepest insecurities. In public. Hannah is nervous. Coach Beiste sends them from the locker room…er, classroom.

Outside, Alex tells Matheus he is his biggest competition. Marissa talks with Emily, who says that she feels good. Lindsay then blathers on and the others are like “Shut. Up. Lindsay.” Damian thinks she has an opinion about everything and wants to put a sock in her mouth. Matheus would appreciate that.

Fortunately, Eric comes in and tells them about the signs they will be wearing in Universal City Walk. Hannah chooses “Fat.” Alex chooses “Gay.” He says it’s a hard work because he just came out to his mother. In high school. Lindsay says she feels like a trophy so she chooses “Fake.” McKynleigh talks about being biracial while Samuel talks about feeling unwanted or rejected. Emily is crying. She says music producers used her sexually. Everyone wants to give her a hug and Eric says she should choose “Used.” They have a group hug as Samuel says it doesn’t feel like a competition. They then break and someone says it’s back to work and she hates them all.

Coming Up: What is Marissa’s vulnerability?

Time to work on the vocals! So the Gleekabes report to the studio to work with Nikki. She says vulnerability can be hard to get across in the vocal work. Nikki asks Marissa about her word and she replies “Flawed.” When Nikki asks why, Marissa says her heart is racing. Nikki doesn’t want to push her. Cameron says his word is misunderstood and Nikki doesn’t think they saw the real Cameron. Damian says his word is “numb” like he’s just going through life and Nikki is impressed.

The Gleekabes report to Universal City Walk. Eric sets up a monitor to let the others watch the performances. Hannah is up first with her “fat” sign. She says she’s going to rock it out as Robert watches on set. We see Lindsay with her “fake” sign. Zach is there to talk about Matheus and how he was weak the week before but now he’s breaking their hearts. We get to see Matheus work with Dot-Marie. She tells him to make eye contact  and to be strong. He stands on something to give her a hug. Zach watches Cameron in his “misunderstood” sign. Cameron confesses he’s not an emotional person and he really needs to work. Zach thinks Cameron is too confident and normal for this assignment.

Emily dons her “used” board and starts crying. Zach thinks Emily’s humor might be hurting and she needs to keep focus. Damian has his board and is afraid he is going to hurt this week. Why…Yeah, usually I’m against subtitling someone with an accent, but there are times Damian really does need it. We move on to Alex as Robert thinks it was a learning experience for Damian. He says he’s spacing out, thinking about his issues. In the tent, Marissa decides to change her board because she feels like a coward after Alex’s honesty. We scroll down to see Marissa’s vulnerability is “anorexic.” Damian is visibly shocked.

Video time! Marissa really stood out in the video. I think she was the most vulnerable.

Coming Up: Their fates.

We come back to the Boys’ Dorm on callback day. Cameron says everyone is drained from this week and now they have elimination. Everyone reports to the stage as Robert and Zach enter. Hannah, McKynleigh, Marissa, Samuel, Alex and Matheus are safe. Hannah is so happy as she leaves. Emily isn’t as shocked and Zach tells her about the humor and focus. Robert tells Cameron he didn’t connect and he needs to learn that. Zach thought Damian was selling being numb rather than being honesty. Robert says that Lindsay applied the notes she was given but is safe. Our bottom three are Emily, Cameron and Damian. Damian is assigned “Are You Lonesome Tonight.” Emily has “Grenade.” Cameron is singing “Your Song.”

They enter their rehearsal room. Emily knew she was going to be in the bottom three. Damian practices his song but has a breakdown. Damian had to choose the love of his life or his career at the tender age of 18? I want to give him a hug. Cameron also practices his song and knows he didn’t connect.

Ryan comes in with Zach and Robert, ready to watch the bottom three. Robert explains why Cameron is there. Ryan calls it a “coffehouse performance.” Ryan thinks he’s a cool cat but he thinks Cameron is a model. Zach explains Cameron was trying to impress Ryan and came out looking like what Cameron thought Ryan wanted. Ryan orders him back into his own clothes and gives him a chance to do the song again.

Coming Up: Someone’s gotta go.

Gleekabe extra: Emily uglifies herself and becomes a new competitor.

Emily is next. Emily’s been growing on me, but I think she was trying too hard. Ryan thinks so as well but had a breakthrough for how to use “Grenade” on Glee. Emily says she was a hot mess on set while Ryan calls her moving. She makes a joke and Zach says that was part of the problem. Cameron comes back out to redo “Your Song.” Ryan is more impressed and says he likes “that guy.” Cameron is dismissed. Damian is next and Robert says he’s the most vulnerabile but needs to tap into that. Ryan says he worries for Damian. And that’s a song I’d petition Sharon to add to the show. Damian reveals he broke down while listening to the song. Ryan says his performance inspired him. Robert and Zach were just amazed. Someone get that boy a box of tissues!

The judges talk amongst themselves. Zach isn’t sure about Damian and roots for Emily. She’s backstage gushing about Ryan’s comments. Ryan isn’t sure about Cameron. Ryan asks Zach who moved him the least. Cameron is smarting over Ryan’s comments. Meanwhile, the judges made their decision as we go to…

COMMERCIALS!

I saw the commercial for “The World According to Paris” where she thinks she might be pregnant. Did you see the panicked look in Kathy Hilton’s eyes? Kinda funny.

Robert posts the callback list and announces this to the Gleekabes. The three hug the others. Damian wants to stay, Emily thinks she saved herself, Cameron thinks he is going home. They approach the list. Damian is safe as is Cameron. Emily is the one cut. The others come to give her a hug as she says she had an amazing time. She loved everyone there and hopes to find her pot of gold. She sings “Keep Holding On” as the others back her up.

The Glee Project:

Alex
Bryce
Cameron
Damian
Ellis
Emily
Marissa
Hannah
Lindsay
Matheus
McKynleigh
Samuel

I’m a bit sorry to see Emily go. Once she stopped being the flirt and/or seductress, she was pretty decent. She did have some of the more entertaining confessionals. It was pretty obvious that Emily would go home from the amount of confessionals she had. I read on Television Without Pity that Ryan regretted one of his eliminations and I was wondering if he maybe he cut Cameron this week. It would’ve been a shock with everyone predicting he’s the winner.

Another comment on the Television Without Pity board was that producers were interested in one person’s story from this episode and would use it in Glee. Most of us assumed it would be Marissa’s as they took pains not to reveal her anorexia. When they gave a sneak peek at the completed video, they had even blurred out her sign. However, once it was revealed, it was never addressed. And it would make a very good episode or character arc for Glee. They’ve already hinted at it with Quinn when Mercedes passed out from Sue’s diet. Emily’s story would be interesting and edgy as well, though I don’t know who would fall into that trap. Maybe Rachel, but she’s too industry-savvy to fall on the casting couch.

What do you think?

Next episode: Dancing! Hip hop! Matheus has an attitude! It’s airing in two weeks! Next week is the Fourth of July, after all.

Quote of the Episode:

“McKynleigh forgot she had a personality, Matheus forgot to bring his pizzazz. And Damian forgot he was a boy.” –The Glee voiceover guy in the catch-up.
