OUAT: Defying Gravity

Last episode: Mary Margaret went into labor!

This episode: Mary Margaret prepares to give birth as the residents of Storybrooke try to prevent Zelena from getting the baby. But first, let’s learn more about Zelena and Glinda, shall we?

So let’s go back to Oz, where Zelena watches her sister practice with Rumplestilskin. She seethes until Glinda enters to thank Zelena for revealing the truth about the Wizard and setting Oz free. Zelena’s like “Oh, thanks.” She revels in the attention and stops stalking her sister. So Glinda introduces her to the other witches of Oz, who shall remain nameless.

(Glinda, Witch of the North; Not Important, Witch of the South; and Who Cares, Witch of the East)
She explains to Zelena that they each represent a direction as well as a characteristic—courage, love, wisdom. Glinda invites Zelena to join them as the Witch of the West and represent innocence. Zelena’s like “Have you met me? Not exactly innocent here.” But Glinda says that releasing her anger and jealousy toward her sister will make her innocent again. Zelena agrees to it and her green skin returns to it’s normal hue. Glinda gives her a jewel to wear to help control her powers.

But clearly Zelena is back out for revenge. Regina and Emma put up protection charms while Whale helps Mary Margaret through labor. Emma wants to go find Zelena but David won’t let his eldest go alone. He insists she take Hook with her. Emma points out one flaw in this plan—“I have magic, he has one hand.” (Though he is shown to be an expert swordsman throughout the series). No one points out the other flaw—his lips are cursed to take away Emma’s powers! And he is sending them after the person who wants to take away her powers. Does having half a heart affect David’s brain?

(Emma can't believe how stupid this plan is)
In the merry old land of Oz, Glinda and Elphaba Zelena bond. Glinda tells Zelena that there’s a prophesy saying a strange twister will bring a powerful witch from another land to Oz and she will defeat a great evil. Glinda believes Zelena fulfilled the prophesy. Are we really going to call Walsh, the Phony Wizard of Oz, a “great evil”? Please. As they are talking, another twister hits Oz and they spot something inside. Witches of Oz, away!

They find a destroyed house but not a munchkin or the Witch of the East in sight. However, there is someone inside. Glinda and Zelena pull the person out to reveal a young girl dressed in gingham. No pigtails, no little dog. But it is Dorothy Gale of Kansas. And she wants to go home.

(She's Dorothy. MGM just owns a lot of things related to her)
As Emma goes to face down Zelena, she leaves Henry with Regina. And Doctor Hopper. Hi, Doctor Hopper! He and Henry talk, which is nice. Henry is reading the apartment listings in Storybrooke, saying he and Emma are going to need their own place. Mary Margaret’s is getting a bit crowded. Maybe Mary Margaret and David should move into a bigger place and leave it for Emma and Henry? I’m sure she would find a cottage quite suitable. Dr. Hopper asks if staying in Storybrooke is what Emma wants. Henry believes it is.

But he’s wrong! Emma tells Hook she’s going back to New York once Zelena is defeated. Hook asks about her parents. Can she just leave them? Can she make Henry leave them? And he now remembers Regina raised him for ten years—will they allow themselves to be parted again? Hook wonders why she’s so determined to go back to New York. Emma says things are normal in New York and they were happy. Hook points out those were manufactured memories by Regina’s spell and Emma counters that the year in New York was real, if based on a lie. Hook asks if she could be happy in Storybrooke (with him?). She’s determined to go to New York.

Guess who appears? It’s Zelena! And she thinks the two of them look so adorable. They should totally kiss. Emma’s like “He’s the last person I would ever kiss.” Hook tries to pretend it doesn’t hurt but you can tell it does. So Zelena takes matters into her own hands. She orders Rumple to drown Hook in a nearby pool.

(Emma can't believe Hook is bobbing for apples without her!)
He struggles but can’t fight the magic. Emma’s pretty useless in this scene. Once Hook stills, Rumple releases him and the two leave. Emma rushes to Hook’s side and realizes what she has to do. After pleading with Hook to not die on her—even calling him Killian—she begins mouth-to-mouth. Her lips touch his and boom! Goodbye, Emma’s powers.

(It looks like Emma's powers also double as Casper, the Friendly Ghost)
In Oz, Glinda and the other witches fawn over Dorothy. They give her food, listen to her stories, talk to her, and are just downright nice. Except Zelena. She’s jealous again, thinking Dorothy is going to take her place. After all, Dorothy could also fit the prophesy. And in that case, Zelena is the great evil facing Oz. More believable than Walsh, the Great and Phony, I say. Zelena starts to turn green and she vows vengeance on Dorothy. Of course.

Zelena and Rumple prepare to storm the hospital. Leroy raises the alarm, putting everyone on edge. Robin and his men arm themselves and he tells them to avenge Little John. Zelena easily freezes them. Next is Belle, who refuses to run away. Zelena knocks her unconscious and Rumple runs forward to catch her. Zelena insists his choice of true love before ordering him to follow her. That leaves Regina, who sends Henry to go hide somewhere with Dr. Hopper. But she’s no match for her half-sister. Once again, Regina is knocked unconscious and falls to the floor.

(Regina really likes the floor, doesn't she?)
In the delivery room, Mary Margaret gives birth to a healthy baby boy. And then Zelena storms in, freezes everybody and takes the baby. That was really easy. She leaves with the Dark One trailing after her. Poor Mary Margaret! She’ll never have a happy birth, will she?

Back in Oz, Dorothy finds Zelena by a well, reading the prophecy. Zelena starts laying into the girl, saying Dorothy is here to kill her. Dorothy doesn’t want to kill anyone. She wants to go home! Back to Kansas! But Zelena does believe her. She conjures a fireball. So Dorothy uses logic and throws water at her. Cue the melting and the “What a world” and bye, Zelena! Glinda comes out and Dorothy explains it was an accident. Glinda tells her about the prophecy and says Dorothy is the hero of Oz. She takes her to the Wizard, free from Zelena’s spell with her death.

(She's melting! She's horrifying!)
In the Emerald Nightclub City, Dorothy asks The Wonderful Walsh of Oz to send her back to Kansas, please. He gives her the shoes he gave Zelena and tells her how to get back. She clicks her heels three times, thinks of Kansas and bye bye Dorothy! Glinda thanks the Walsh. But it’s really Zelena! She faked her death! This is startlingly close to the (SPOILER!) finale of the musical Wicked, where Elphaba fakes melting in order to runaway with Fiyero AKA the Scarecrow. (END SPOILER!) Zelena banishes Glinda to Pre-Pevensies Narnia and continues her plan to seek revenge on the sister who did nothing to her except exist.

Emma returns to the hospital to learn that Zelena has her baby brother. David’s going after her and Emma reveals she lost her powers. They are screwed. But not really! Henry steps up and says Regina can do it. She protests, saying she doesn’t use light magic. But Emma points out that True Love’s Kiss is light magic and she experienced that last episode. Henry tells his mother he believes in her and Robin echoes the sentiment. It’s Regina to the rescue!

(Regina and her men)
Zelena takes the baby to a barn where she’s drawn a weird compass that mimics the table the Witches of Oz sat around. There’s Rumple’s brain (intelligence), Regina’s heart (love), Charming’s sword (Courage) and now the baby (innocence). Yes, she’s using what she learned in Oz to go back in time. And it appears to be working. Fog fills the barn and Zelena tells Rumple things will be different. He swears he’ll never choose her but Zelena says he’ll have no choice. Bye bye, Regina?

(You got to admit--that does look cool)
But wait! Here comes the cavalry!

(Okay, they may not be the Avengers, but they are fearsome. Somewhat)
David leads Regina, Robin, Hook and Emma into battle with Zelena and the Dark One. It’s a pretty one sided fight. Rumple takes out most of the cavalry pretty easily even before Zelena calls in the flying monkey. Robin reminds everyone that the monkeys are their friends and I have to wonder where he was to remind them that last week? Anyway, it comes down to Regina vs. Zelena, as usual. Zelena taunts her sister, telling her she’ll never win. They both use dark magic! She raises Regina in midair as the other woman struggles.

(She's defying gravity!)
But Regina says she is more than dark magic. And than knocks her sister down with light magic. She takes off Zelena’s jewel and the witch is now powerless.

Wicked may be stronger than evil, but good trumps all!

Robin has Regina’s heart, Rumple gets his brain back, David gets his courage AND his son back as well. Zelena tells Regina to finish her off, but Regina refuses. Rumple is more than happy to, but Regina uses his dagger to stop him. She tells him that today, they are the good guys and the good guys don’t kill people. Except for half their friends who were flying monkeys last week. Oh, wait. We’re not talking about that. But one flying monkey we will talk about—Little John is human again! Welcome back, Little John!

Anyway, Mother and Son are reunited while Hook talks with Emma. She’s still determined to go to New York and get far away from him. She and Henry go in to meet the baby.

Rumple is reunited with Belle, who has the dagger. Regina gave it to her and Rumple asks her to keep it. He trusts her with it. And then he asks her to marry him. Rumbelle fans: Aww! She accepts and makes him promise not to seek revenge against Zelena.

More on that later.

Zelena is in jail and gets a visit from her sister. She wonders if Regina’s there to finish her off after all, but Regina just wants to talk. Zelena says Regina had Cora and Regina’s tries to convince her that life with Cora wasn’t all roses. I’m pretty sure it was mostly emotional and psychological abuse. But Zelena seems to take more after Cora as she says that Regina was queen. Regina’s like “But I wasn’t happy.” She tells Zelena that revenge is not a way of life and offers her a second chance. She hopes Zelena takes it. Zelena doesn’t respond. Regina leaves to store Zelena’s necklace in her vault.

Remind me again why you didn’t smash it, Regina?

Rumple, meanwhile, is not done with Zelena. He’s stolen the dagger from Belle. And he’s going to break his promise to her in order to keep his promise to Neal: Avenging his death. He kills Zelena and returns to his shop. Meanwhile, Zelena’s ashes blow about as a green cloud erupts from Regina’s vault. They all converge on the abandoned barn and the time portal is opened.

(Or is it the Eye of Sauron?)
Uh oh.

Tune in next week when we find out where the portal takes us!

If you saw this up earlier, sorry about that. I'm not sure why it posted rather than scheduling it. Here it is, formatted and with the screencaps!
