Galavant: Can You Hear Me Now?

Last time on “Galavant:” The entire cast, crew and creative team were surprised they got a second season and the cast sang about it. After the song, the Good Pirate Bonneville’s ship was destroyed when Richard chose the wrong spot to land. The pirates sent him and Galavant on their way and they stopped at the Enchanted Forest, where Kylie Minogue made a shirtless Galavant perform and Richard serve drinks. But Richard’s Uncle Keith broke them out and they continued on their way.

In Harry’s kingdom, everyone but Isabella enjoyed freedom and good life. She was still trapped in her “room,” waiting to marry her young cousin. Meanwhile, Sid ended up working for Gareth when he was employed to help Gareth get the recognition he deserved from Madalena: King of Valencia.

Also, John Stamos briefly returned as Sir Jean Hamm. It was blink and you might miss him.

Moving on, we’re back to square one with Galavant and Richard. Namely, the king is annoying the knight with his all his incessant whining. Richard plops down on a log and needs a rest, while Galavant once again tries not to strangle him. Galavant then apologizes and admits he’s missing Isabella. Richard points out that they only shared one kiss and it wasn’t even a good one. Galavant argues that…until he starts to reconsider everything.

In Harry’s kingdom, Isabella confides in the chef. She tells him that she’s going to escape and gives him a red jewel she’s wearing around her neck. She tells him she’s had since she was born and that she wears it everyday. Chef remarks that he’s never seen it before today and she swears she wears it everyday. He pretty much calls her a liar and Isabella moves on quickly, saying that she’s entrusting it to him. If something should go wrong with her escape, she asks him to give it to her parents.

(The ruby Isabella ALWAYS wore. Totally. Always)
Chef asks when she’s going to escape and she explains during the changing of the guard. He agrees that it’s the best time since it’s a long and ridiculous ceremony which leaves the palace wide open. She says she’s going to go find Galavant and be with him. Isabella admits that they weren’t together for long but they did have one magical kiss. Chef says that palace gossip says it was a horrible kiss. She considers this and we launch into a song…

It starts off like a true Disney ballad, with Galavant and Isabella singing about their kiss while sharing a fantasy dance together. But as the song goes on, they then stop looking at the kiss through rose-colored glasses and start to admit that maybe it wasn’t the greatest. Still, they’re in love and they promise to never forget that one kiss.

(Disney Love Song Moment)
Isabella wakes in the morning, surprised to find Chef standing by her bed. He says she never gave him the [bleep] jewel (and you can imagine ABC’s censors shaking their heads and giving thanks this wasn’t live). She apologizes and does so, getting ready to escape Harry’s palace.

Back in Valencia, Madalena discovers a portrait of two dogs jousting now hanging in the throne room. She asks who put it up and Gareth says it’s his. He says that now that he’s king, he thought he’d add some personal touches to the place. Madalena smiles but once he’s gone, she orders it thrown in the moat.

(It doesn't look too bad)
I sense a war brewing.

Galavant and Richard arrive at a town. Galavant goes to make some inquiries and leaves Richard to sit down and to try not to get in trouble. But then something catches his eye so of course he has to go investigate. What is it? A unicorn!

(Look at it! It's magnificent)
The owner comes over and notes that unicorns are drawn to virgins. Richard’s voice takes on a high quality as he denies being a virgin. But the unicorn keeps following him around, much to his dismay. Galavant comes up to him and they spot the tent of a fortune teller, Edwin the Magnificent. They figure they might as well give it a shot.

Isabella pulls the Jester aside, saying she’s going to sneak out during the changing of the guard. He agrees that’s the best time since it’s an elaborate and ridiculously long ceremony. Then he notes someone should reconsider it. Isabella asks for his help in distracting Harry and he agrees, wishing her luck.

(Isabella is tiny)
Galavant and Richard go inside to speak with Edwin the Magnificent. Who is played by the next entry in the Galavant Star-Studded Guest Cast List: Simon Callow! Hey, Simon! Nice to see you pulling your best “traditional idea not Once’s interpretation of Merlin” look.

(Kinda looks like Dumbledore)
Edwin is the real deal and knows who Galavant and Richard are immediately. Richard gets a thrill when Edwin calls him Galavant’s “friend.” He’s so sweet and…crap…I’m now shipping Richard and Galavant. How? What? Oh well…

After Edwin receives a call from his wife on his crystal ball, Galavant and Richard get the idea to call someone. Namely, Galavant decides to call Isabella on the red jewel she gave Chef. So he gets Chef and Gwynne. He asks why Isabella isn’t wearing the jewel since she always wears it and they call him out on that as well.

(Everyone's favorite side characters!)
Richard jumps in and asks about Gareth. Chef and Gwynne break the news that they are not in Valencia but in Harry’s kingdom. They also tell him that Gareth has declared himself king alongside Madalena. Betrayed by the man who has always been his best friend, Richard goes out to process this and leaves Galavant to speak to Isabella, demanding Chef go find her.

Meanwhile, Gareth has discovered that his jousting dogs painting has ended up in the moat. Sid confesses that the queen ordered him to do it, so Gareth goes to get revenge. He throws something of hers into the moat and they fight. In song.

(These silly kids...)
While Sid tries to mediate before most of the castle’s furniture ended up in the moat. In the end, Madalena and Gareth admit that they both can’t stand Sid so they agree to work from there, sparing him from ending up in the moat. It kinda reminded me of the song last season where Sid and Galavant admitted to being annoyed with Isabella while they travelled with her.

Anyway, Chef gets Isabella and hands her the jewel. He doesn’t think to tell her that the connection is bad and that Galavant tends to freeze. She and Galavant talk and bring up the kiss. But with Galavant’s connection, she only hears negative words and believes he’s reconsidering their romance.
Then it goes from bad to worst. We the audience can see that there is a cow who has wandered into Edwin’s tent and won’t leave. Galavant and Edwin are trying to get it out, but Isabella doesn’t know that. With the bad connection and already believing the worst, Isabella believes that Galavant hates her and wants her to marry Harry.

(Poor Isabella!)
Galavant leaves the tent, happy to have spoken to Isabella. He finds Richard and they decide to continue on to Richard’s palace. Galavant asks where Richard got the sword he’s holding. He replies it was just lying around, stuck in a rock. We zoom to a plaque on the rock which says that whoever pulls it out is the true king.

Congrats, Richard!

Brokenhearted, Isabella cancels her escape plans even though the elaborate and ridiculously long changing of the guard ceremony is going on. She sings a sad reprise of the song about the kiss and returns to her room, resigning herself to marry Harry.

(Buck up, little camper!)
Galavant and Richard arrive at where Richard’s palace is supposed to be…but it’s not there. He’s certain they’re at the right spot and they wonder where it’s gone. The camera pans up to show the outline of the palace and its rooms in the grass. And I’m reminded of the scene from Robin Hood: Men in Tights when Robin makes it home to find Loxley is gone.

(It looks like it was a very nice palace)
So what happened to Richard’s palace? I guess we’ll have to find out. My bet is that his mean older brother stole it.

I do feel bad for Isabella. She really thinks Galavant doesn’t love her anymore when we know he still has feelings for her. I still ship Richard and Galavant but I have no doubt the show is going to go the Galavant/Isabella way. Which I don’t mind too much. I just hope Isabella doesn’t do something stupid. Or at least remembers she’s kickass without Galavant and realizes she towers over her cousin. She can probably fend him off and get him to release her from the marriage contract.

Next time: Richard tries to take back his kingdom.
