Time for the season 2 premiere, titled “A New Season or Suck It Cancellation Bear.” Awesome.
We open on the ship of the Good Pirate Bonneville as Galavant and Richard moan about how long they’ve been at sea. Pretty much all year, since it’s been a year since the first season of Galavant. To cheer himself up, Richard asks Galavant to sing his theme song again. He starts but the pirates stop him. Apparently he’s been singing it a lot and they are sick of it. Six of them walked the plank voluntarily last week! They say it’s a new season so it’s time for a new song.
(Welcome back, you two!) |
It is entitled “A New Season” and catches the audience up on all the major characters. It ends with a Brady Bunch scene where all the main characters are in their own square, though Sid drops a spoiler. The others call him on it and the song ends.
(Sid better watch out) |
We next see the ship in pieces on the sand as pirates drag themselves ashore. Richard sits up as Galavant pushes away debris and admits he seriously miscalculated. The Good Pirate Bonneville’s crew is glad to be rid of the king as he and Galavant head off in search of his palace.
(Moral of the story: Don't trust this man) |
In Valencia, Madalena and Gareth hold court. And Gareth has a ridiculously long title. Anyway, two peasants come forth with a chicken. It seems there had been an egg between their properties and they ignored it…until it hatched. Now they want to know who the chicken belongs to. Gareth starts a complicated “Which came first?” theory but Madalena cuts it short when she orders the chicken to be cooked for her dinner.
Talk about your evil queens.
Anyway, the two peasants are ushered off to the side to wait as Madalena is going to make them watch as she eats their kitchen. Sid comes up next and asks if he can be freed. After all, he’s been in the dungeon for a year. Madalena and Gareth are like, “Um, no. Next.”
Meanwhile, Isabella still doesn’t want to marry her cousin. Her parents are still for it, despite her major objections and everyone’s relative disgust with the situation. They tell her to forget Galavant and do what they say.
(Parents of the Year they are not) |
Shout out to Once Upon a Time, who usually has Galavant’s slot?
Anyway, Richard explains that his father used to have a really good friend who he called “Uncle Keith” and I’m pretty sure most of the audience already knew where this was going. He says that Uncle Keith went into the Enchanted Forest and never came out. Stopping, he points to a sign that says “The Enchanted Forest” and Galavant is relieved it’s just a pub.
They enter and its filled with men. Richard is still unsure about the place and Galavant catches sight of a familiar one—Sir Jean Hamm (John Stamos in a quick cameo). There isn’t much time to process as a song starts up and everyone is excited for a performance by the Evil Queen—Kylie Minogue!
(Hi, Kylie!) |
.
(Thank you, sir) |
Uh oh.
Meanwhile, Sid is able to take a bath and is shocked when Gareth comes in. He asks for Sid’s help and will make him his servant, getting Sid out of the prison. Sid wants to know what Gareth wants. Since he can’t read, Gareth wants him to read the kingdom laws for him to see if there’s a way for him to be declared king rather than the ridiculously long title bestowed on him now. Sid agrees.
(Yay, Gareth!) |
She then spots Chef and Gwynne and goes over to talk to them, asking them for help. Chef says he wants to help her and calls himself a feminist. Gwynne agrees, saying he’s even going to let her keep their first daughter. Anyway, they say it’s too dangerous and Chef leaves—reminding Gwynne she only gets one daughter. The others get drowned. She turns back to Isabella, beaming. Isabella is just confused.
(The happy couple) |
Richard goes off to sulk when he runs into someone he never thought he’d see again—his Uncle Keith! Keith pretty much confirms that he was gay but Richard’s oblivious over it. But Keith offers a way to get Galavant and Richard out, but they have to be quick. Richard thanks him and goes to get Galavant.
The two peasants watch as Madalena eats their chicken, looking both forlorn and hungry. Gareth and Sid approach and Sid explains that Gareth has the right to be called King under Valencia law. Madalena shrugs and says okay. Gareth is announced as king and takes his throne yet again.
(All hail the King and Queen) |
(How convenient) |
As they wander off, Richard wonders why Uncle Keith never got married. Galavant has to tell him that his uncle is gay. It doesn’t click that his father may have been bisexual at best or that The Enchanted Forest is a gay bar. He even asks if Destiny knows about Keith’s sexuality and Galavant replies that he’s pretty sure he does. Galavant then apologizes to Richard for the mean things he said to him and Richard forgives him.
Yay!
We end with a reprise of the opening song and everyone back in the Brady Bunch square.
(The Galavant Bunch!) |
And all the guest stars we get this season!
