The Nine Lives of Christmas

It’s that time of the year again! Yep, it’s time for Hallmark to reveal this year’s ornament and so the Hallmark Channel gets to bust out the Christmas movies for a week, even though we’re all floating in the pool right now.

But I’m going to post some things about the Hallmark Christmas movies to contribute to this week. So put on a Santa hat or reindeer antlers, put on some Christmas music and let’s pretend it’s December!

Ho ho ho SPOILERS!

It’s nearing Christmas in some place nice and warm as firefighter Zachary (Brandon Routh) takes in a cat name Ambrose after his owner passes away. Zachary is a bit stereotypical—doesn’t believe in marriage and is happy just having flings, no matter how much his happily married captain encourages him to settle down. He doesn’t want to be tied down and is already looking for a permanent home for Ambrose.

Also in this town is Marilee (Kimberly Sustad), a young woman studying to be a vet. In the meantime, she works at a pet supply shop and hides her own cat Queenie from her landlady as pets are not allowed in her townhouse. Her sister is married and a successful realtor, wanting her sister to find love as well. But Marilee is determined to become a vet and get set in her career before she finds love.

One night, Zachary and Marilee end up in the same grocery store. She spots him trying to buy cat food and asks him what kind of cat he has. Firefighter replies an orange tabby so she advises him to stay away from the food he’s holding as it will upset his stomach. She shows him a good brand and then picks up her own cat food. He thanks her and walks off, though she starts to berate herself for talking about cat poop to someone so cute.

They keep running into each other and a friendship forms. Marilee, though, claims he’s her boyfriend to get her well-meaning sister off her back. Her friend tries to help her find someone similar but Marilee realizes she’s falling for him. Zachary, though, is in a relationship so she feels he’s off limits.

However, he feels drawn to her as well. When his girlfriend gets her fired, Zachary dumps her and spends more time with Marilee. At the same time, Marilee’s landlady discovers Queenie, her cat, and evicts her. Zachary offers to let her stay with him and Ambrose, which she accepts.

Once they are sharing a roof, Zachary realizes that he’s falling for her but continues to fight it. Even as it becomes clearer that they are perfect for each other. But of course, we need some conflict—right?

Marilee decides to invite Zachary to her sister’s party but he says he has to pass, telling her he has something for work. So she goes alone. As she wanders through her sister’s party, though, she finds Zachary flirting with a blonde. Heartbroken, Marilee leaves and returns home to pack up. She leaves, lying that she has a new place and job. Zachary is reluctant to let her go, asking if Ambrose and Queenie can at least have play dates. She agrees, saying they’ll set something up after the holidays.

They are miserable apart and Zachary’s captain gives him a stern lecture. So on Christmas, he goes to find Marilee at the adoption fair in the park. She asks about the blonde at the party and he reveals that it was the mayor’s wife. He was at the party to promote the fire department’s calendar, so he really was working. He then asks Marilee out on a date and she accepts, sharing a kiss with him atop the fire truck.

Is it a bit cliché and predictable? Heck yes. It’s a Hallmark Christmas movie. I don’t know about you, but I’m not expecting much from these movies. Just some fluff to put me in the holiday mood and make me believe in romance all over again. And that’s what this movie does.

Tis the season…
