Face Off: Sitting in the Graveyard…

Time for a new season of Face Off! I’m all excited, are you?

LA! Our group of contestants storm a building and everything is set up for their first challenge. And there’s Sheridan Crane McKenzie Westmore to welcome them to FaceOff! The building used to be a cathedral, the site of baptisms and funerals. McKenzie says that the season is about life and death. Then she reveals that none of them are on the show yet. This is their final audition. Everyone is shocked. Two people will be eliminated before going to the house or the lab. She says the contestants have to pick to represent life or represent death then pick an item from the box to incorporate into their makeup.

On Your Mark

Get Set!

RUN!

We meet Damien from Kansas who gets a ripped throat appliance. He’s into it as he get his start making his own haunted house. We move on to Keaghlan, who got her start in musical theater. Woot! She decided to do life and make a goddess character. Scott is really nervous and admits it to his model. He’s on the life side but he feels his appliance won’t work. But he figures out how to incorporate it.

Drew got two prosthetics and makes a foot soldier from the Underworld. Cool. Cig sings about his life warrior, saying people have to fight for life. He hopes his “kooky craziness” will take him to the end. Yes, he used kooky. Barry, meanwhile, is lost until he finds a good costume. So now he has an Elven pirate who heals people. Interesting. He wants some money for his son’s college. Smart dad. George has worked in a house and on movies, but he wants to advance his career. His goal: Director.

Everyone wants to direct.

“Doc” gets to make a vampire. He’s been auditioning for FaceOff for forever and is determined to make it on the show. Gabby is as lost as some of her competitors. And he doesn’t work with her design. Sasha meanwhile discovered her passion in high school and went to school for makeup. She creates the Raven Maven. She uses the piece elsewhere but she knows what will work. Dina used to be a cake decorator but feels makeup will let her be more creative. Vince has worked with Michael Westmore (McKenzie’s dad) and won an Emmy working with him on Star Trek. But he left the industry to raise a family.

McKenzie tells them to start working. There’s more to the challenge! Everyone panics as we head to…

COMMERCIALS!

So, what’s McKenzie’s big announcement. She gathers everyone ‘round. She tells them that they have to be able to adapt. So there’s something else for them to work into their makeup. But she has someone to help them…Mr. Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund. Everyone is thrilled. He tells them to look at their model and to use it as a base to work on. Englund says he was inspired by the claw. Everyone grabs their items.

Stella looks at her diamond brooch and is confused how to work it into her animal fertility goddess. She’s also worried she started makeup later than others. And she feels the brooch will send her home. Rachael says she has Southern sensibilities with a New York edge. Cool. She wanted to create a sea goddess…but she got fur. So she adds land to her concept, but she’s worried.

Jason thinks his creature is getting weirder and weirder. His new appliance has changed his makeup, like everyone else. So now his creature is a medieval creature. Jason and Gwen have a little powwow by the paint. She got into special effects after her mother had her watch a show to get over her fear of monster movies. Gwen is one of the few people who isn’t affected by her new piece.

McKenzie announces they have an hour left. Dina uses her cake decorating skills while Gabby worries more. Everyone is panicking as time is called. Stella is still certain she could be going home as we head to…

COMMERCIALS!

Cig says everyone is nervous. McKenzie starts showing off everyone’s work. I like Stella’s, George’s, Cig’s, Dina’s, Keaghlan’s, Barry’s, Sasha’s, Damien’s, and Vince’s.

McKenzie brings out the judges. Well, two of them. Glenn Hetrick and Neville Page are there! Where’s Ve? She’s working! The Hunger Games is still being filmed. Glenn and Neville take their closer looks. They aren’t sure what’s going on with Scott’s character. He worries as we go to…

COMMERCIALS!

Neville and Glenn move onto Stella’s. They like the idea. Glenn praises the way the werewolf face not look like a werewolf face. And they are impressed with Keaghlan’s work. Neville likes Gabby’s idea but Glenn doesn’t seem impressed. Glenn likes Sasha’s decision. The models are dismissed. Neville says he was impressed but a few fell short. McKenzie dismisses them and says they will see everyone on the reveal stage. She tells them the prizes. I’ll hold off to the finale recap, like usual.

LA! The contestants enter onto the reveal stage. They stand there like a Chorus Line. One, singular sensation…Anyway, Ve’s there! Hi, Ve! Stella’s happy too. She respects Ve. McKenzie reveals that Ve won’t be there for most of the season. Drew is disappointed Ve won’t be there. But McKenzie introduces the newest judge: She’s worked on War of the Worlds, Lincoln and won an Oscar for Braveheart. Ladies and gentlemen, Lois Burwell! She’s adorable and British. Lois joins the judges. The contestants have been separated into two groups.

Group 1: Cig, Rachael, Stella, Damien, Drew, George, Barry, and Doc
Group 2: Everyone else.

Group 1 are all contestants! They will be competing week in and week out for the grand prize. McKenzie sends them backstage to celebrate. Group 2 then are the week’s best and worst looks. Kealaghn goes first. She explains she wanted to make a creative muse and Glenn says it is an impressive first showing. He feels a Hindu inspiration. Ve praises the color palette while Lois likes the headdress. Sasha is next. She says that Maven, the Mother of the Ravens, and she instructs the birds to attach those who approach her grave. Neville says she ignored the forehead appliance but it works. The other judges like her work.

Scott stands before the judges. He explains that he creates a celestial soldier who rescues the souls of those taken by demonic powers. Lois says it’s not a “living” makeup. The other judges aren’t thrilled either. Jason is next. He explains that she’s a well creature who eats her victims. Ve doesn’t like the paint job and Neville thinks the model is buried. Glenn says the cheek throws everything off. The judges reveal that they’ve decided on who is going home already. And that is…

Going to be revealed after the COMMERCIALS!

So who is going home? Scott. Aww. Sorry, Scott. He thanks them for the experience and says the makeup doesn’t represent him as an artist. McKenzie dismisses him. Bye, Scott!

Dina stands before the judges. Glenn says her design screams “Life!” Ve loves her veining. Dina says she piped it on her using her cake decorating skills. Neville likes she used the set to inspire her makeup. Gabby is next. She admits that she went horribly wrong, trying to make the piece fit the theme instead of the other way around. Ve says that was a bad idea. Neville likes the idea of the colors but doesn’t think it’s not done well. Lois says it’s not appealing. Gwen is next. She says she was trying to personify death. Neville says there’s a bit muddiness. Lois says faraway, it’s striking but close up it falls away. Glenn hopes she gets more bold in her decision making. Vince is last. He created a mutated zombie demon. Lois likes his makeup. Glenn says the pieces helped him evolve his creature. Ve loves the red hair.

McKenzie dismisses Group 2 as the judges deliberate. They discuss the looks they liked. Lois praises Dina for thinking outside the box and Glenn says Vince used the pieces the best. Neville says Jason tried to build something interesting though it failed him. Lois admired Gabby’s honesty about how sucky her choices were.

Group 2 returns to learn their fate. The winner of the sudden death challenge is…

After the COMMERCIALS!

So the winner is…Dina! Yay! I’m pegging her as one of my early favorites. Glenn says she has found her true calling. Dina, Kealaghn, Sasha and Vince are also on this season. They head backstage. Jason, Gabby and Gwen step forward to learn their fate. Gabby is the one going home. Glenn says there wasn’t much to save her makeup but they respect the fact she realized it was her fault. Jason and Gwen are on the show! McKenzie says goodbye to Gabby. She says the pressure got to her.

The season 7 cast has a group hug backstage.
