We keep journeying to the end. Hang on!
We open with Robin catching up with her mother. Ullman can’t wait to meet Barney. She hopes he’s nothing like Robin’s father was. Ullman says there were a lot of warning signs before the wedding. Like how he was a playboy who slept with a lot of women. And was engaged to a stripper at one point! Sound like someone we know?
And it goes on, but the main thrust of the episode isn’t really Robin. It’s Marshall. Robin calls down to Barney to meet her mother and he says he’ll be up soon. He’s just finishing up some time with Ted, Marshall, Ranjit and Billy Zabka. Billy mentions having seen Lily at a pharmacy the other night, when she and Marshall had their big fight. And then he saw her getting into a car with the license plate “AHOY”. Everyone knows who owns that car—The Captain, who offered Lily the job in Italy. Marshall can’t figure out why Lily was with The Captain. Barney asks if Marshall wants to go over to The Captain’s Farhampton house and punch him. Marshall does, so Barney has Ranjit start up the car.
Meanwhile, Ullman has gotten to her own wedding day. Apparently Robin’s dad disappeared hours before the wedding, saying he had to go teach someone some manners. He then emerged from the woods carrying a dead animal. Robin, nervous, calls Barney to find out where he is. He says he has to go teach someone some manners. Robin hangs up and asks if there are any wild animals nearby.
The gang arrives at The Captain’s house. And Marshall punches The Captain. But he takes it in stride, letting them into his house to clear things up for Marshall. He’s not interested in Lily romantically. Especially as he has a fiancée. Who? Well, remember Becky, Robin’s perky former co-anchor played by Laura Bell Bundy? Who famously was part of a well-known commercial that was just her dancing around while chanting “Boats, boats, boats”? Yep, he’s marrying her! Wonder what drew him to her?
Anyway, they try to figure out why Lily needed to go to The Captain’s house the night she fought with Marshall. Becky reveals Lily went straight to the bathroom. Ted asks if the bathroom overlooks the water and has a window. The Captain confirms it does. Ted Mosby, Architect.
But Ted then morphs into the Mosby Boys, his old sleuthing persona. Marshall and Barney settle in for some ridiculousness. Ted reminds us that Lily (and actually the entire gang) has a vice: Smoking. He surmises that while Marshall was in Minnesota with Marvin, she was indulging again. Lily’s been trying this entire weekend to get in some last smokes, Ted thinks. That’s why she bailed on him as they drove to Long Island, so she could smoke on the train. Someone’s forgetting that he drove her off in order to chase after Robin. And I’m also pretty sure it’s illegal to smoke on trains now in New York. Ted keeps going through, pointing out moments where Lily would sneak out for smokes. Including the night of the big fight.
Ted says he has proof! He asks the Captain if there’s a plant in his bathroom. The Captain confirms there is a daisy plant there. Ted predicts that they will find Lily’s cigarette butt in there because she wanted to be ecologically sound. So the Captain has someone fetch the daisy plant. But it’s not a cigarette butt they find in there. No, Marshall pulls out a used pregnancy test. A positive one.
Marshall understands everything. Lily wasn’t smoking in the train bathroom. She was tossing the cookies the Mother made. When she ordered the Kennedy special from Linus, she also asked that her drinks be non-alcoholic. And that night when she stormed out, she decided she couldn’t wait until she got back to the city to take a test. She went and got it, taking it at The Captain’s house. The positive result made her change her mind about Italy. Marshall says he has to go back to the hotel.
Lily already knows they went to The Captain’s, so she’ s not too surprised when Marshall bursts in and declares “You’re pregnant.” Lily says she told them she could keep a secret. Marshall says they have so much to do, including finding a hospital in Rome. Because he’s changed his mind—they are going to Italy so Lily can pursue her dream.
Meanwhile, Barney meets Robin’s mother. When he hugs her, Ullman says that Barney is nothing like Robin’s father. Robin relaxes. Everyone clears out to give Marshall and Lily some space. Robin and her other (unwisely) choose the balcony. When Marshall and Lily start the sexytimes, mother and daughter continue to chat. Mother tells Robin that she should be sure she’s marrying someone who is always there for her, someone she can depend on no matter what. Oh, look, an anvil!
We flash forward a year to see Lily and Marshall in Italy. They are happy and are there with Lily’s dad as well as Marshall’s mom. And we see that Lily and Marshall had a baby girl who they named Daisy. Aww.
So, Lily’s pregnant! And she’s been drinking non-alcoholic drinks the entire time! So has she been pretending to be intoxicated to get away with stuff? Like spilling the fact that James and Tom were getting a divorce? Or was that written and then the creators decided to make Lily pregnant? Anybody?
And I guess it’s a good thing these recaps are taking longer than I expected. Maybe by the time I get around to the final one, I’ll be over the finale.
Maybe.
