The Glee Project: This is Our Show

This season on “The Glee Project:” Fourteen—rather than twelve—Gleekabes competed for a role on “Glee.” Mentored by Glee cast members, they sang for their survival. Well, except Taryn who quit the show. They dealt with bullying, Zach’s dance class, Ryan’s moods, stunts in the name of tenacity and other nonsense to achieve fame. One by one, they were eliminated—until the last episode where both Michael and Lily fell short of the finale. Three Gleekabes—Bland, Ali and Aylin—remain. Who will Ryan and his hat choose to be on Glee? Find out!

Glee!

Our final 3 are amazed they are in the finale. They talk about singing for Ryan. Aylin wants to win and show Muslim women they can be free spirits. Robert talks to them about “Glee-ality” and singing “You Can’t Stop the Beat” (from “Hairspray”). He hands out lyric sheets. Robert wishes them luck before remembering he brought them backup vocalists. The eliminated contestants. Ali says she can’t believe it. Did you not see last year’s finale when they DID THE SAME THING? Ali takes over and starts directing everybody.

The choir room is full again and Robert admits this Glee star is the inspiration for the Glee Project—Chris Colfer (Kurt). Except Colfer was actually tested for acting skills. Robert talks about how Chris inspired Ryan to write a role for him just like the finalist will. Chris inspired a role; the finalist is doing Ryan’s job for him. They perform the song…Bland can really move his feet.

Bland’s moves impressed Chris. He praises Aylin and Ali So who is the final winner is all three of them. Someone took a page out of Ryan Murphy’s book. Ali talks about how there will only be one winner. Supposedly. Robert and Chris announce the video will be “Tonight, Tonight” and at the high school prom. Aylin is sneaking to prom, Brand is the popular but humble prom king (“a fictional character” quips Colfer) and Ali will be a Mean Girl. Like last year, the finalists will pick their own Last Chance Song.

Time for choreography! Zach says as a group they look the best when they aren’t dancing together. So he does a line dance. Ali struggles so Michael is partnered with her to help. Zach tells the finalists to take control and then bids them goodbye. Group hug!

Coming Up: The video! Special guest!

Vocals with Nikki! She approves of the finalists. Bland enters the studio and sounds off. She thinks it’s a bit high but he’s pushing too far. He eventually nails it. Aylin comes in next. She hasn’t yet memorized her lines. But Nikki likes her voice. Ali is last who wants to impress in the studio after goofing choreography. She seems to succeed. But I don’t think Nikki was going to be critical at this stage. The eliminated Gleekabes come in to record their backing vocals—first the girls and then the boys.

We go to the three-on-one with Chris. He tells them that whatever song they choose will be with them forever and that he will be doing “Single Ladies” at some Bar Mitzvah somewhere. The finalists laugh.

Time for the shoot! Erik tells Aylin to be herself. The judges praises Aylin though Zach wonders if she’ll handle the backlash of her character. Meanwhile, Erik is directing Bland to stage dive. The judges talk about how solid and consistent Bland is but that he’s…well…Bland. Ali rolls in to be a mean girl. Nikki praises Ali as a consummate performer. Zach worries she might look forced. But then he hops out to direct the group dance. Erik calls cut and says he has a special guest. And there’s Damian McGinty, last year’s co-winner and Rory on Glee. Look at how charismatic he is—where was that on the show, Damian? I love you but there was no charisma.

Video time! I’ve seen it a million times, so I’ll just keep typing my thoughts. I think last year’s video did a better job of showcasing the finalists but letting the eliminated Gleekabes have a moment. I don’t think there’s much to Aylin’s story in the video except she just wants to dance. I like the swings but Ali’s faces on them prove Zach’s point about looking forced. Also, if I was a studio exec watching this video, I’d point to Shanna and be like “And she’s not a finalist because…? She’s stealing the video. Get her and put her on the show ASAP.” Because I really think Shanna stole this and was more memorable to me than the finalists.

Except Ali’s stupid swing face. Someone needs to make a GIF of it. I think I can use it on tumblr for something.

The group hugs after Erik calls “wrap.” But the finalists have to pick their songs and worry about performing for Ryan.

Coming Up: Only one winner. We swear! Honest!

The finalists are on stage as the judges enter. You know, I thought Nikki would give birth before the finale was taped. They talk about getting a role on Glee, getting downloaded a lot, changing their career. Robert asks about their song choices. They are:

Aylin: “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele to show off her sassy and vulnerable side.
Ali: “Popular” from “Wicked” to show off the sweet yet manipulative girl.
Bland: “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain because it has significance to him.

Ryan will pick one winner (No, we swear! We do!) after they perform for the eliminated Gleekabes, guest judges and writers. Robert dismisses them to go practice. Ali really wants this and can’t go home empty-handed. Aylin calls it the biggest performance of her life and making her dreams come true. Bland talks about showing Ryan he’s different. Good luck. We’re at the finale and I’ve yet to stop calling you “Bland.”

The audience files in as performance time nears. I want Dianna’s top. Ryan greets the audience—I like that Brooke gets to sit in on the performance as well. Oh, hey, Damian’s there too. We get a montage of serious faces.

Coming Up: Performance time!

Gleekabe extra: The finalists bond.

Ali is up first. She’s excited to see her audience and sings “Popular.” We’ll, she’s no Chenoweth but she’s holding her own. And what’s with Erik’s strange laugh? She gets a standing ovation. Ryan praises her and Ali talks about how the show has changed her life.

Bland is next with “I’ll Be.” He gets a standing “O” before doing anything. What? Bland tells Ryan he wrote a poem. Oh Lordy, really? Wait, is Blake really half-Cuban? Everyone applauds and apparently the judges need tissues. Ryan doesn’t seem or sound impressed.

Aylin is last. Oh, they are giving everybody standing “O”s. Must’ve missed Ali’s first one. Ryan asks about what her mother would think of the dress. I think it was established a couple episodes ago that Aylin’s parents aren’t the strict conservational family she keeps mentioning but the relatives they keep in touch with back in Turkey.

Ryan talks to the Glee cast members. Darren, Dianna and Grant support Ali. Writer Ali Adler supports Bland as do some of the other writers. Sam supports Ali, Erik supports Bland. Charlie speaks up for his girlfriend. Ryan and Amber agree with Charlie. So does Damian. Ryan sums it up: Everyone is split. The only one who hasn’t said anything is Ian Brennan, the creator of Glee. And he’s there. Robert dismisses the audience.

The judges talk about the finalists. Nikki thinks Ali possesses the inspiration people turn to Glee for. Ryan was impressed Amber was impressed by Aylin’s voice. Ian likes her story. Zach thinks Bland could go farther and Robert calls him a star. Ryan is still split. We get images of the finalists looking nervous.

Coming Up: Someone win this already!

The finalists are on stage again and the audience is back. Ryan greets them. He tells them it was a hard night for him as he kept debating between them. Ryan says he had an easier time last year but the show is changing for Season 4. And there’s only one winner (rumor is Oxygen wasn’t happy with the ending last year). He praises them all. Ryan tells Aylin that Amber was impressed by her performance. Time for the results. Our winner is…

Bland.

I didn’t see that coming. To be honest, I thought Aylin had this in the bag. Ryan REALLY liked her story and it seemed Ian did. Aylin and Ali embrace as Bland hits the stage in surprise. Aylin and Ali give your usual runners-up speech about being better off due to the competition.

BLAND.

Sweet Lord, Murphy. This was the girls’ competition to lose and they did. You know this doesn’t help the claims you are a member of the he-men women hating club. But on some level I guess I know why they chose him. He can act—certainly better than either Damian or Samuel—and can sing. He can also dance. And we’ve heard about “new Finn” for a while now. Which is odd to me because Finn is still on the show so why do we need a new one? And the girls in the Glee club are down to Tina, Brittany and Sugar. There needs to be more girls in the choir room! While girls like to look at hot boys, we also like to have a female character to relate to as well.

Well, we’ll see Bland walking the halls of McKinley High this coming season in a football jersey, trust me.
Thanks for sticking around the entire season for my recaps! If there’s a season 3 of “The Glee Project,” look me up!

Quote of the Episode:
“We’re back, bitches.” –Charlie.
