Galavant: Daddy Issues!

Last time on “Galavant:” Galavant and Richard fought. Again. They ended up on opposite sides of a feud between giants and dwarfs, who were fighting over a bridge. In the end, Bobbi made everyone see commonsense. The dwarfs and giants made up while the other three rode out to Hortensia.

Wormwood continued to exert power of Isabella using the magical tiara, even having her send her parents to the dungeon. He made a mistake, though, when he sent Isabella to see why Princess Jubilee didn’t RSVP. During the rough-and-tumbled Jubilee’s number about being a rebel, the crown was knocked off and Isabella was freed from his grasp. And boy was she pissed.

Meanwhile, Gareth confided in Sid that he was starting to fall for Madalena. Sid tried to talk Gareth out of it but Gareth just told Madalena all the bad things Sid said about her. So Sid had to run for his life.

Sid takes refuge out with the peasants of Valencia. However, Madalena has already had wanted posters printed up and the people want to turn Sid in. He pleads with them not to and reminds them that they are victims of Madalena and Gareth as well. He rallies the people to the side and they prepare to storm the palace. Sid even carries a red flag, which I like to believe was a shout out to Les Miserables.

(Do you hear the people sing?)
Unfortunately, it was all a ruse. The people run off once Sid’s in the courtyard, pretty much leaving him gift wrapped for Madalena and Gareth. He realizes he’s screwed.

After the title card, we return to Galavant and company as they traverse through the woods, still trying to get to Hortensia. It seems they are running low on food and are even contemplating eating Tad Cooper. Well, Roberta and Galavant are. Richard is scandalized by their suggestion.

But then they stumble upon an interesting sign—Property of Sir Arnold Galavant. Roberta and Richard realize they are on Galavant’s ancestral home and ask if they can stay with his father. Galavant’s like “Nah, he’s probably not even home. Let’s keep trudging along.” But they outvote him and continue toward the house.

(Arnold?)
In Valencia, Madalena plans a surprise party for Gareth. She has a feast laid out and then tells everyone to duck as he approaches. They jump up and yell surprise, causing Gareth to start attack those closest to him. Madalena manages to get him to stop, revealing that it’s a party for him. However, Gareth seems less than thrilled.

(Surprise!)
He then explains that he used to go to pubs on his birthday and get into fights, earning his birthday scars. He shows a few off and Madalena decides that’s how they’ll celebrate. She’ll take him to a pub so he can get a new one.

Isabella returns to Hortensia and heads straight for Wormwood. His assistant notes she doesn’t have the crown anymore. She tells him his control over her is done and he is banished from Hortensia. Wormwood leaves, alternating threatening her and giving her wedding reminders. She shows great restraint in not killing him.

(Personal space, Wormwood)
Galavant, Robert and Richard arrive at Galavant’s father’s house. There are a lot of boys running around and Galavant is surprised. It turns out his father has been taking in orphans and training them to be knights. He welcomes Galavant, Richard and Robert and tells them to come in.

There’s just one thing…Galavant’s father is now played by Greg Wise rather than Anthony Head. What gives?

(You, sir, are not Anthony Head)
Anyway, Madalena and Gareth find a pub…but no one is up for a fight. Everyone is too afraid of Gareth to fight him. It looks like he won’t be getting his birthday scar.

Poor Gareth.

Wormwood and his assistant arrive in a forest, which is called the Forest of Coincidence.

(How convenient)
They come across Sid, who managed to flee Valencia and is trying to find everyone. Wormwood tells him they were coming from Hortensia and reveal everything that went down between Isabella and Galavant. Sid’s sure something got mixed up and wants to go help out. At that point, he is given a sword and a horse by people in the forest and goes riding off. But before he leaves, he warns Wormwood that Madalena and Gareth are warmongering, blood-thirsty tyrants.

Wormwood is intrigued.

Back at his dad’s, Galavant tells Richard and Roberta about how his dad was too busy being a knight to be a dad. And he’s certain the man hasn’t changed—that he’s still selfish. The boys, though, disagree and they sing about how Arnold saved them from very desperate situations and that he’s the greatest. Galavant sings counterpoint, reiterating his stance that he is the worst.

That’s when he realizes Daddy Dearest is right behind him.

Isabella’s parents are brought up from the dungeons and she apologizes to them. They forgive her and ask for her forgiveness in trying to force him to marry Prince Harry. She forgives them and turns to her negotiations—trying to get out of her marriage to Harry. He agrees to release her on one condition—he wants her bra to show his friends. She’s indignant but the alternatives are a bit more brutal, so she agrees.

(He is only eleven after all)
Isabella is a free elf!

Galavant goes exploring and discovers that his father has a wall with paintings of Galavant’s exploits. Arnold comes in and apologizes for being a poor father when Galavant was growing up. He says he’s proud of his son and that he’s been following his adventures for years. Father and son reconcile.

All together now:

In Valencia, Madalena tells Gareth she has a birthday surprise for him. She brings in Wormwood and tells Gareth that she’s going to start a war for his birthday. He smiles, pleased with the chance to kill people on the battlefield.

(That's creepy)
Galavant and his father have some bonding time, tossing a cabbage around. Arnold goes to get the a fresh head of lettuce as Richard and Roberta note that he’s made up with his father. At that moment, Sid rides up and hugs Galavant. He tells Galavant about Madalena, Gareth, and Isabella. Galavant realizes he has to ride out to Hortensia. He’s just going to need a sword.

Sid happens to still have the sword from the Forest of Convenience. He tosses it to Galavant, who gets distracted. He misses the sword and it pierces him. Everyone gasps as Galavant gives a shout to Monty Python—“I’ve had worse”—before he realizes it’s pretty bad. He keels over as the episode ends.

(It's only a flesh wound)
Oh no! Are they really going to kill the lead? (Just roll with me, please). What’s going to happen to Isabella? How evil is the Gareth-Madalena alliance? Will Wormwood ever plan the perfect wedding?
Find out!

Next time: Is Galavant dead? Can Isabella stand against Madalena?
