Galavant: Curtain Call

Last time on “Galavant:” Chef and Gwynne found themselves in the center of the battle as the armies of Valencia and Hortensia converged right where they had settled after leaving the palace. Galavant and Richard arrived with their zombie army, allowing them to reunite with Isabella and Gareth. Madalena betrayed Gareth by using her magical powers to turn the battle to her favor. As most of the main cast sought refuge in Hortensia’s courtyard, Madalena made them one last offer. When they turned it down, she faced Gareth’s betrayal and left to finish the battle.

Who wins? Who loses? Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?

(Sorry. I haven’t been able to stop listening to the Hamilton cast recording).

But before we begin, I just learned that Joshua Sasse and Kylie Minogue (the Evil Queen back in Episode 1) are engaged! I’m not sure if they met on set or before that, but it’s kinda sweet. So congrats you two!

Back to our story…

We start in the past with a young Richard and a young Gareth. He goes to play with the kids his parents paid to be his friends. I know I was trying to spot young Roberta but I don’t think they had her, which is a total missed opportunity. Because I’m pretty sure she liked him even then and probably was a true friend to Richard, like Gareth. Come on, show!

Anyway, Richard realizes that everyone is just praising him because they’re scared of Gareth, not because of anything he really does. He wonders if he’ll ever make something of himself and sings about it. Older Richard comes in to sing a duet and reveal that, no, they don’t really make anything of themselves. But he can alongside Galavant.

(Richard and his inner child have a depressing realization)
The song is interrupted as the others remind him they are in the middle of a battle and have zombies trying to break down the gates. He’s like “But I was communing with my inner child.” They tell him to knock it off and focus on trying not to die.

Everyone then hears something and Wormwood uses his telescope to investigate the noise. He spots a massive group of people heading their way and focuses in on them. Sid is leading them and he calls them the extras of Season 2. They cheer and head down to join the fray.

(The extras)
Sid weaves through the army of zombies and asks the others to let him in. They do so and he comes in with a few warriors. He explains he went to the Enchanted Forest and Princess Jubilee and recruited the extras but not the big names because they blew the budget already. Our heroes feel more hopeful about their chances now.

With all the extras fighting, the main cast heads up to the Royal Tent for something of a reunion. Madalena and Isabella have another showdown, an epic battle that ends with Isabella victorious.

(Go, Isabella!)
Meanwhile, Wormwood comes face to face with the only thing that can defeat D’Dew—the sword Richard pulled out a few episodes ago. It means he is the true king, destined to unite them all under his reign. Aww, congrats, Richard. He places Tad Cooper somewhere safe but in the ensuing battle, it appears Tad is killed. Enraged, Richard slays Wormwood.

Galavant congratulates Richard, who sticks the sword back in a stone and pulls it out again a few times.

(He's enjoying himself)
They discover that Tad Cooper is still alive and Richard realizes he needs to stop Roberta. Meanwhile, Gareth tries to talk to a defeat Madalena, to get her to come home with him. But she leaves, watching as Galavant and Isabella are reunited.

(Happy couple #1)
Isabella is thrilled to be able to be with Galavant. He drops to one knee, pulls off a link of his chainmail and proposes to her. She accepts and it looks like there will be a wedding after all! After watching them, Richard decides to go after Roberta and stop her from leaving him. He rushes off as Wormwood pops up to give some last minute wedding suggestions before dying for good.

Roberta waits on line to board the ferry to the Isle of Spinsters. She hands over her ticket and is given her own cat. As she’s about to get on the boat, Richard appears to stop her. She’s thrilled he’s alive and that he’s come back for her. They reunite and she suggests they leave before the other spinsters kill them.

(Happy couple #2!)
Hey, it’s Weird Al Yankovic!

He’s back with the other monks who took a vow of singing to officiate Galavant and Isabella’s wedding. And it turns out that Galavant’s first name is Gary. Gary and Isabella exchange their vows and get to have an even better kiss then their first as everyone applauds.

But Weird Al isn’t done yet! He then wraps up everyone’s storylines. Chef and Gwynne go back to their little shack, Richard and Roberta assume their proper place on the throne together, Sid gets to become a knight while Gareth decides to go find Madalena, to see if he can sway her from the dark side and to choose him. And Galavant and Isabella get to live happily ever after.

Weird Al says that though they’re pretty sure there won’t be a season 3, they are going to set one up just in case. We cut to a creepy castle as Madalena knocks on the door. Someone opens and she says she wants to learn the Dark Arts from the person who owns the castle. The servant gives her a necklace. She asks if its an amulet imbued with dark magic. No, it turns out the greatest owner of dark magic is also a fan of accessories. Madalena enters, ready to begin her next chapter.

(I'm down for this)
We end with Roberta and Richard getting ready to end their day. She tells him to go feed Tad Cooper as he won’t eat unless Richard feeds him. Richard heads outside and ties up a goat. Fire fills the screen and though we don’t see him, we realize that Tad Cooper is in fact a dragon.

So ends Season 2 of Galavant. It was zany, magical and a pretty great ride. Richard seemed to outshine Galavant a bit more, the one on a journey to believing himself and finding love, but I didn’t mind. Do I think it’ll get a Season 3? With the shakeup at ABC, I’m not sure. It would be nice but if this is it, that’s fine as well.

Thanks for reading and watching!
