Wanna be on top?
Alisha goes home to see her picture and the Brits drive into their box. Eboni talks about being in the bottom two and Annaliese calls her a cat with nine lives. Laura says that Seymone should’ve stayed and Eboni only scratched by. Eboni hangs out with the Brits and Alisha asks Laura if she likes Eboni. Laura is honest and says no, that Eboni is vain. Eboni asks for an example and Laura says it is how she carries herself. And apparently she likes to look in a mirror.
Nigel shows up in the middle of this lovefest with Chinese food. He talks about what he’s looking for in judging. I’d say to learn it future contestants, but…well…The girls get giant fortune cookies. The girls reflect their challenges and strengths. Nigel opens his cookie and reveals the girls are going to Macau, an Asian island. Right now. The girls run upstairs and start packing.
Sophie thinks they’ll like her in Asia. Catherine talks about being the runner up in her cycle of Britain’s Next Top Model and how she told her parents she’d take a second chance and run with it. The girls wonder about the flight and Sophie says she had a long flight. Except she went to Buenos Aires.
COMMERCIALS!
The girls fly to Macau, complete with usual ANTM graphics. Laura is happy to make the Final 6 as the girls take in the sights. Meanwhile, Laura talks about her alcoholic parents some more. Sophie tells Eboni that her look is going to work here which is why Tyra kept her. She talks more about being poor. Sophie talks about working to support herself after moving out of home as the girls arrive at their hotel. There is a show to greet them. Guys, it’s America’s Next Top Model. Anyway, Mr. Jay greets them in Cantonese. He says that he welcomed them to Macau, but for all we know, he just said “Tyra fired my ass so I don’t care anymore.”
The wannabes go upstairs to see their rooms, which is decorated by their pictures. Alisha says that she feels like a millionaire. The girls are floored by the size of the bathroom before Annaliese and Catherine decide to actually look at the view. Annaliese says that she’s learned more about herself in this competition.
Alisha is cranky and goes off when Sophie apparently took out some of her clothes. Sophie apologizes but Alisha keeps going on, much to everyone’s annoyance.
COMMERCIALS!
TYRA MAIL! “Your face is your fortune. Can you change your destiny?” Eboni thinks it’s CoverGirl. Yeah, they haven’t shown up yet.
Anyway, the wannabes meet with Ms. J, who introduces them to Clement Chan. He is a Chinese astrologer. He talks about the five elements: Fire, water, earth, wood and metal. Alisha goes first for a reading. He looks through her book and says that she is close with her mother. He tells her that there will be sacrifices—work or family? She doesn’t like that. Clement says she can be stubborn. Laura is next and is called emotional and strong. She is told to be herself and is metal. Sophie is destined to be famous but people will be jealous. She looks good in red. Catherine is told to wear green. Annaliese has energy and he asks if she likes to talk. “Yes!” the wannabes chorus. Clement says he sees Eboni’s childhood was a mess and assures her things with her family will get better. He tells her to remember that she is young and not to be afraid to embrace it.
After that, Ms. J lets them loose on makeup, accessories, and fabrics so that they can create a new aura. Sophie thinks that Laura is her competition. The girls parade before Clement. He doesn’t like Catherine’s green lipstick. He should’ve seen the atrocity the girls were forced to wear in panel that first week. Anyway, Clement says they all did great and chose Laura as their winner. She gets a spa treatment on Macau. Eboni gets to go as well. The two hug and the Brits are like “Don’t you all hate each other?”
Laura and Eboni go and just agree to be cordial. Though Eboni admits to being uncomfortable.
TYRA MAIL! “Prepare to meet some smooth operators.” The girls hope for a dragon.
Mr. Jay greets them and tells them they will be wearing silk. And accessorized in silkworms. The girls are like eww. And I can’t look at the screen due to my fear of my bugs.
COMMERCIALS!
We come back to the silkworm. Mr. Jay tells them to show the emotion in their face and eyes. Their photographer is Paul Tsang. I do notice Macau residents have very Christian names, so I guess they welcomed the missionaries.
Anyway, Sophie bonds with her silkworm, named Edwin. She tells him to smize and he pops up. Barney Cheng is the designer as Annaliese goes up first. She’s not too thrilled with the silkworms and Jay tells her to work on her emotions. Mr. Jay says she took direction. Meanwhile, Laura says she loves bugs and also bonds with the silkworms. She says she feels powerful during really good sex. Alisha is like “WTF?” Mr. Jay loves it.
Eboni tries to be 30-Never but Mr. Jay doesn’t think she gave good emotions. Sophie and Edwin are next. She calls it a “posh creature.” Laura thinks Sophie is her biggest competition. Catherine worries about looking like a witch. Mr. Jay asks her what would make her sad. She says “death” and gets truly sad. But Mr. Jay isn’t impressed. I think she’s the goner this week. Alisha is last and says hi to her worms. Mr. Jay calls her “posey” and she says she’s in the zone. Mr. Jay says he wants to work with Alisha again but isn’t sure he’ll get it after today.
That’s a wrap!
The girls are nervous. Laura talks smack about Eboni in confessional while Alisha confides in Eboni.
COMMERCIALS!
Tyra welcomes the girls to Macau. There are judges Nigel and Kelly. Barney Cheng is our guest judge. There are prizes. The Brits seem to be getting creative with their shirts. Laura is first with her own tights. Nigel loves her face. Tyra thinks she was caught in a moment. Kelly praises her and Barney says that it captures the Chinese culture. Eboni is next. Kelly likes it. Nigel likes her pose, not her emotion. Tyra doesn’t like her body angles.
Catherine is up for UK. Tyra thinks she can do better. Barney talks about how she froze and then how she broke down. Nigel tells her to go for broken heart over death. Alisha is called a singing gram. Barney and Kelly agree she didn’t sell the dress. The panel loves Annaliese’s photo. Sophie is last. Nigel calls her look extreme or not right. Tyra praises Barney’s dress but not impressed with Sophie’s pose.
COMMERCIALS!
The judges deliberate. Tyra praises Laura’s neck. Nigel loves Eboni’s body position but she did lose her neck. Catherine didn’t impress but Tyra thinks there is something special about her. Alisha fell flat and took the dress with her. Kelly still doesn’t like Annaliese. Nigel wants to see another pose from Sophie. Barney says he likes the shot. “Because your dress looks good!” Tyra exclaims. And he doesn’t deny it!
COMMERCIALS!
ELIMINATION! The first photo goes to…Laura. She is joined by Annaliese, Sophie and Eboni. Alisha and Catherine are our bottom two. This is a hard call. The girls approach Tyra. Alisha: Models are paid to sell clothes and she failed. Catherine: Timeless and done well but the photo was weak. Who stays? Alisha. The two hug. Tyra tells her she has the most high fashion look and she has to use it.
Catherine and Tyra hug as Catherine says she’s so happy to meet her. Tyra says the feeling is mutual. She tells Catherine to be like the queen, to keep the confidence. Catherine says she grew during competition and will use her newfound skills to advance her career in England.
America’s Next Top Model:
Alisha
Annaliese
*Contestant quit competition
I am sad to see Catherine go. She was one of my early favorites. Laura is starting to grate. There is nothing wrong with embracing one’s sexuality, but it seems to be her go-to. And she doesn’t really like anybody, does she? I think the show is projecting a Laura-Alisha final 2, which is a shame. I’d like to see Sophie in the final 2.
Next week: Stunt fighter! Laura vs Eboni! Models suspended in mid-air!
Quote of the Episode
“Smize, Edwin, smize!” Sophie to her silkworm friend
